FF7 Remake did release under more ideal circumstances with a larger playerbase, but even with that in mind, I'm surprised to see Rebirth reportedly perform by such a significant margin. A third and final game is in the works though to complete the trilogy, and a PC release might help boost those numbers. Since the exclusivity for this one is so much shorter (3 months versus 1 year), a lot of people like myself are waiting for the PC version.
  • @clarinetkid17
What did they expect. There were like 100 million ps4's when remake launched and 50 million ps5's when rebirth launched. Half seems about where you'd expect that to land.

Something I feel a lot of people forget... most everybody HAD to entertain themselves at home in 2020

Don’t worry guys. This is only this timeline The game is selling exceedingly well in another timeline, and when all the timelines converge and everything comes together at the reunion, everything will be ok
  • In my opinion people are likely just gonna wait for the inevitable all three games in one bundle they are gonna do

There's also a good group of people who where disappointed in the story changes that they made in the remake. It didn't bother me much, but a number of my friends all decided not to play rebirth after that. They wanted the original 7's story just updated mechanically and graphically.

Everyone knew that just like the sales for remake fell off when people realized it wasn’t a remake at all. It’s not about exclusivity. Nothing at all
  • @NeFlorence
Three possibilities 1) Lots of new people who didn’t even play the original FF7 game wanted to try it out so they bought Remake. Maybe it wasn’t their thing so they’re not buying Rebirth. 2) Hype died down. While yes, it’s still high, it pales in comparison to when Remake first came out. 3) Waiting for PC port/waiting until all 3 parts are released

man, it's almost like they're missing a big market on another platform or something
  • @lostremote2400
The online promotional voices and marketing they hired to promote the game when it started south were worse than rabid dogs. Fans didn't like being attacked for voicing concerns or opinions. Or that they didn't matter and supposedly 'Millions of millions' simply loved the game and you were the odd balls. Along with the bastardization of the original story's legacy, censorship issues (yes there was plenty, In narrative and character design) topped off with its scatter brained overall feel. REBIRTH attempted to fix those issues but it was more of the same. It didn't need to be this way and the outcome was set in stone. Its a disappointing mess of a experience to a legacy that deserved the royal treatment. If they couldn't tell 7's story with all its dark tones, mature topics and fan service/love story in today's climate they really shouldn't have.

Helldivers, a $40-60 USD Co-Op shooter title available on multiple platforms, outselling Rebirth, a (so far) PS5-exclusive RPG title... costing $70-100 (600 for Collector's Edition) USD? It's a mystery, really.
  • Square will never be content with anything, they want final fantasy to sell like god of war or elden ring. It's never gonna go as big as the original ff7 and they gotta understand that.

$200 in groceries used to last my family 2+ weeks. Now it's around a week. Then these game companies raise the cost of games in a time when their customer base is hit by inflation, shrink-flation, etc. $70 is TOO MUCH for a video game!!!! And they have the nerve to talk about raising the prices another $10 within the next couple years. The customer base will speak with their wallets!
  • It's sad to admit that my hate for Square Enix has overtaken my love for Final Fantasy to the point where I refuse to give them any money

I was disappointed with FF7 Remake, mostly with its story. The Whipers, and new alternate timeline/dimension i hated. It was advertised as a remake, and we were sold whatever this new trilogy is, which we wont really find out until the 3rd part. Is it sequel to FF7, a side-quel to FF7, or just a re-telling? If FF7 Remake did well enough, I would have bought a PS5 just to play Rebirth. But Remake showed me where the story was going, and I had no interest in continuing with it. And before anyone comes at me for this stance, I enjoyed the gameplay, I enjoyed the original story bits, and I enjoyed all of the additional content and story. It's just the new aspect with Sephiroth crossing dimensions and altering timelines that doesn't vibe with me. It doesn't even fit within the lore of FF7. Especially after looking into Rebirths explanation of how this new aspect works. "Every time a decision is made, the life stream splits reality into those two decisions." ok, how and why? Since when does the life stream have this ability? Gaia isn't the center the of universe in FF7, it's not the source of all energy in the universe, only the source of life on the planet. Keep in mind that Jenova came to Gaia from a meteorite, and its implied that that meteorite was from a dead planet, that she destroyed, which might not have even been her first. What she tries to do to Gaia she had done before, which means other planets have or had their own life streams. Are they able to also change fate? I'm by no means a lore expert on FF7, it's just that this new story doesn't make sense, nor does it fit the themes and per-existing lore in the game. And every time i saw the Whispers, I just rolled my eyes. And everything I've seen so far from Rebirth, they seem to take center stage again, along with this new time/dimension hoping story line. Going as far to rob pivotal scenes of their impact (IE the forgotten capital), because these dumb Whispers have to be front and center on that too! Ugh, I have no intention of buying Rebirth, or the 3rd installment. No thanks.

A lot of people think its exclusivity. But I think its more than that. There are people who dont like the idea of it being episodic and split. There are players who dont like the idea of not being turn based. There are those who bought remake and dont like the whisperers, and other stuff that are with it. I loved both Remake and Rebirth. But this doesnt surprise me as great as these games are. There are certain players out there who wanted something different.
