[PERSONAL BEST!!] 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata (ND2) 1:29.028 at Harris Hill Raceway (H2R) - CCW

Published 2024-03-22
Today is definitely a special one. Today is the first-ever time I ran a 1:29 flat on Harris Hill CCW.

I had a really weird feeling driving the Miata in the first session - everything felt slower than before, I could embrace the car's stepping out better, and I could feel more from the steering via my hands. I think driving the 981 Spyder on COTA a month ago is the main reason. Well, that and the 71RS tires (still pretty fresh) and ideal track conditions.

Another thing I noticed is the curve of brake torque. The brakes would stay at a low-torque street feel at first, then after one lap or two when they're warm, I noticed a sudden improvement in torque, and then as I attempted to set more and more flying laps, they became soft again but stayed consistent. Previously I wished the pads could always stay in the strong torque zone, but now I realize that although they feel softer, they provide consistent torque and are easy to modulate (especially under trail braking situations). I just need to practice my heel-toe even more. I think the Spyder taught me how not to always worry about the heel-toe since it has auto-blip, and that in turn helped me stay more consistent on the brake pedal when I need to heel-toe (sounds weird but true!).

Driving the Miata on the track never disappoints, and I find myself always learning a thing or two from it!
