So why is it called 'The Legend of Zelda' anyway?

What's the story behind the name "The Legend of Zelda"? Why is Hyrule's Princess named that way, and what is her legend?

I mean story wise, she is the goddess reborn. It’s her chosen hero, her war, her prophecy and therefore her legend. The legend of Zelda.

“The tragedy of Zelda the 1st” sounds like a story to corrupt a young Jedi.

Because Link is too humble to name his own adventures after himself. Prolly why no one ever recognizes him even in sequels. 💚
  • I co-sign with the already proposed idea that a game focused solely on Zelda needs to be called "The Legend of Link."
  • Link is like the narrator telling the player the "Legend of Zelda" through his own perspective and role in the story
  • Simple: cause the creator loved the name Zelda. And frankly yes, it’s a great name for a fantasy adventure game

I think we’re all happy that this video aged strangely

I remember my dad telling me that when he was a kid he had a NES.He only had Super Mario and Duck Hunt but he used to trade games with his friends, one of his friends let him borrow the original The Legend of Zelda.Since he didn’t know english at the time (so he couldn’t read the manual or the little story excerpt in the beginning of the game)he always thought the protagonist was nemed Zelda since there was no picture of a Princess or a woman in the cartridge of the game he associated Link as Zelda. It is only recently when Breath of the Wild came out that he would sometimes watch me play that he would be very confused when I called him Link “Link” I remember he telling me “who is Link?” I told him it was the protagonist.Thats when he explained to me that all this time he always thought Link was named Zelda cause he never actually beat the original game so he never saw Princess Zelda so he never knew about her.I always thought that was a pretty cool story and didn’t really occur to me that he never knew the protagonists real name.

I definitely wouldn't mind you Zeltik doing short hand videos on little quirky topics/ subjects like this one in the future though I can't give you any topics or ideas at the moment.

Cuz it’s her legend… Hylia and her kingdom’s legend. It’s honestly just a great coincidence that we get to play as her chosen hero.

Including a photo of Leonardo 1:36 is brilliant, because the actor was an inspiration for Link's appearence in OOT. :)

i would love to see “The Hyrule Fantasy” be the subtitle of a zelda game someday, like “The Wind Waker” and “Tears of the Kingdom”

I recently learned that "Densetsu" in Japanese means "Legend", but more specifically, as a legend that is spread by word of mouth. So knowing that, it would make sense why Tears of the Kingdom had that story with Princess Zelda after all.
  • 7:32 - speaking of your Princess Zelda Power Ranking vid, as I commented on there, Zelda2’s backstory of every princess of Hyrule having to be named Zelda in memory of the cursed one is a handy way to solve the issue of the Zelda from the Oracle games appearing to be younger than the one in aLttP, despite featuring the same Link; the Oracle Zelda is simply the younger sister of the one in aLttP, and both are named Zelda due to the old law/tradition.

I also love how The Legend of Zelda is also a barometer for canonicity. Majora's Mask and Triforce Heroes are essentially spin-offs, but we know they are canon because they say the Legend of Zelda in the title.

Looks like someone finally got access to the A/B Thumbnail testing feature!
  • @HyruleGamer
I love videos like these, going into the roots and manuals. For a series created in the 80s, there's so much info that goes easily missed now!
  • @Ryan-uf2gy
Ah, classic question. To put it simply, it’s because it’s Zelda’s legend. It’s her story of the hero link, hence The Legend of Zelda.
  • @StickMaster500
My headcanon is that The Legend of Zelda is merely a story told to countless generations of kids and adults of this epic adventure that is shrouded in myth and legend
  • @Ganondorf98
You can't deny however that "The Hyrule Fantasy" sounds pretty fire as an alternative. It would age well. Alternate reality having "The Hyrule Fantasy: Tears of the Kingdom"
