Space City Gamelan is a group of diverse musicians who have come together as keepers of an amazing collective of instruments known as a Gamelan. The origin is Indonesian, dating back as far as 230 AD (thank you Wikipedia) and the individual musicians are from many diverse backgrounds. We found their story to be a fascinating example that speaks true of the multicultural amalgamation that is Houston.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Salam Budaya

Thank you for your interest in Gamelan, Space City guys. At least, by now we (Indonesian and especially Javanese people) knew that we still have Gamelan set somewhere in the different part of earth. So, when there is no more gamelan here we can SEE you guys playing Gamelan for us. (sing komen negatif kudune mikir, iki carane mas-mas mbak-mbak kuwi ngapresiasi senine dhewe. Malah dinyinyiri. mbok yen pinter ojo nemen-nemen, keminter kaya yak-yak o)
  • Wow, this is crazy, this is the first time I've seen our country's instruments being played by players from other countries. I thank this channel

That is gamelan from Central Java Indonesia, but that gamelan is not the complete set. But I do appreciate people who play the gamelan and off course the composer. I am Javanese and in my family my mom is one of percussion called 'kendang' in Javanese and Indonesian language. Thank you for posting.

Physically this is gamelan, but not the original one. The original one using unique pentatonic scales such as pelog, salendro, and madenda. The gamelan shown here is using standard diatonic scale. It sounds like gamelan, but doesn't feel like gamelan.
  • as a javanese, i appreciate your effort a lot... love and respect from me to all of you.. a good gamelan guru will make you guys play it better tho :)
  • @ak2tine
