By popular demand, one of the worlds most favourite Steam Locomotives, Dolgoch. Affectionately known as 'The Old Lady', we're giving you an exclusive trip aboard this famous locomotive for a full, interrupted journey on the Talyllyn Railway in Wales.

The Talyllyn Railway is the Worlds First Preserved Railway rescued by volunteers in 1951.

Many viewers may recognise key features of our journey as the Talyllyn was the basis for the 'Skarloey Railway' in the Rev W Awdrys Railway Series stories, the basis for the Thomas & Friends TV Series. 'Dolgoch' became world famous after being included in the books, and TV Series as 'Rheneas'.

The Talyllyn journey begins at Tywyn Wharf, by the coast and climbs into the mountains immediately out of the Station. Keep a watchful look out for the Engine Sheds at Tywyn Pendre as the town is left behind and the wide open spaces and mountains of Snowdonia open up in front of us.

After a brief stop for water, our journey continues through stunning scenery to Abergynolwyn. Up until 1976, this was the end of the line for Passenger Trains. The Railway was extended over the former 'freight only' extension to the Quarries of Bryneglwys, which was the reason for the Talyllyn Railways existence - to carry slate from the Welsh Mountains to be transhipped around the world.

We steam on through stunning scenery as spectacular views continue around every corner arriving above the uniquely placed Nant Gwernol Station, high above the ravines of Nant Gwernol below.

Only basing of clues such as sign boards and internet researching. Nonetheless I crunched in the time and effort to make this. Take care guys
  • After looking it up, I've found that this is one of the oldest operational locomotives in the world, having been built in 1866. For reference, the current record holder is an Indian locomotive built in 1855.

The track looks a lot better than the last time I fired Number 2, which must be over 40 years ago! Lovely trip back in time for me, thank you.

What a beautiful little railroad. Obviously well loved and cared for.

Really hope I can go to Talyllyn Railway and meet the useful engines who inspired the skarloey engines once this whole thing blows over

❤ so glad I got to spend a weekend on this line in 2023, it was beautiful as i remembered 😊

This one of the best success stories, it is of determination, perseverance and sheer guts to get the old slate line back and running. Hats off to all concerned and those that run it.. Magnificent !"!

Time seems to have stood still here, since I went on this train ride in the early/mid 1970's 😀
  • I'm playing Mike O'Donnell and Junior Campbell's Skarloey Railway Theme in my head as I'm watching this, and, to my adstonishment, it fits like a GLOVE! Well, I say adstonishment, but I already know full well of the connections. Nevertheless, I just thought to let anyone whose curious about that sort of thing know.

I’ve actually been on Dolgoch at The Talyllyn Railway!
  • Greetings from Puffing Billy Railway in Oz. Great video thanks. I am a TR Member and PBR Volunteer; I missed my bi-annual visit to Tywyn last year thanks to Covid-19. Last visit was over two days in July 2018 when I travelled behind Loco Nos 7,3, then 6 and finally 4. All the best wishes for TR's 70th Anniversary. Cheers Peter Stowell

Lovely steady camera pictures and sound, with beautiful scenery. This video is probably the next best thing to actually being there. Looks idyllic
  • I lived in Tywyn for 10 years. A beautiful little steam train. Takes me back to when I was a young girl and wonderful memories of travelling on the train with my family.... great times..... where does the time go.
  • Thank you for the video. This is likely the closest I'll ever get to actually traveling on the line. Dolgoch is a wonderful little engine. Love from across the pond!
