Russia’s strategic goal is to control nine gaps in what they perceive as their defensive lines because they have been invaded fifty some odd times in their history. They realize that with their declining demographics this may be the last time that they can field an Army big enough to win any war, so now is the time as far as they are concerned. Most of these nine gaps are mountain passes, but some are ocean beaches or deserts. The three most important of these gaps are in Poland, Romania, and the Baltic Countries of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. All of these five countries are part of the NATO alliance, and the United States is Treaty Bound to protect them. Invading Ukraine by itself doesn’t give the Russians anything because none of the gaps are actually in Ukraine, but controlling Ukraine puts them within easy striking distance of the three most important gaps in Russia’s perceived defense lines, which, as I said, are in Poland, Romania, and the Baltic Countries of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. If Russia defeats Ukraine and completely takes over the country, they absolutely WILL invade the countries where these gaps are, in order to control them, which are all NATO countries. They will invade neutral Moldova too. It is imperative that we continue to support Ukraine in its efforts to oust the Russians out of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which has been occupied by Russia since 2014, which is about the last ten years. Quite simply, Ukraine is fighting this war so that American and NATO forces don’t have to be drawn into a direct conflict with Russia on a European Battlefield. Ukraine is okay with this, and is prepared to fight to the last Ukrainian because the only other option for them is to surrender. If the United States and its NATO allies are drawn into a direct war, into actual combat with Russian forces, this WILL lead to a Nuclear War with Russia, which nobody wants to see. Geopolitical Strategist Peter Zeihan is much better at explaining this than I am.

Dispite what Zelenski says all different types of calibre shell's needed for Ukraine artillery is needed and all the different types of mortar shell's needed. This is why the Ukraine president wasn't informed the Russians was listening in.
