A wild raven perched himself on our fence and squawked for over an hour. I went to see what was up with him and saw that he had four porcupine quills stuck in him, three in the side of his face and one in his wing. This video shows my Mom taking out the ones in his face. Very bizarre he let us get that close and even more bizzare he let my Mom pull the quills out. He hung around for the day and was gone the next. Best of luck Wilfred (yeah, I named him) lol

'I will never go near a porcupine again,' quoth the raven, 'Nevermore.'

It's cool how the second time you tried to distract it with your other hand, it remembered it was a trick. What a smart, cute little bird.

For how much that had to hurt, it's crazy he didn't fly away.

Crows are actually very intelligent creatures.

That's a juvenile raven! You can tell because the inside of its mouth is still very pink and the feathers around the edge of its beak are still scraggly and not smooth and pretty.  Baby crows and ravens make friends with people pretty often cause they haven't learned to fear us yet. (Think of a toddler saying hello to everyone they come across in a store!)

So since the raven is intelligent enough to recognise us as problem solvers, I wonder if they can conceptualise some objects being of human origin? When one flies to a village, I wonder if it recognise that village as being artificial? Created by those strange ape things clad in colourful fibres. I wonder how an intelligent bird conceptualises humans in its mind.

Highly intelligent animals. I love it. The fact that it probably understands the pain being inflicted on it is a result of getting the spines out and is in fact helpful is fucking incredible.

Apparently, ravens only have one volume setting: 11

Now give the raven a lollipop and it'll be on it's way, but don't forget to bill his insurance.

Awe, he seems to be going “ OW!!” when a quill is plucked, but then he calms down like he knows you guys are there to help. That's really sweet.

The intelligence on display here is so impressive. This bird A.) conceptualized a possible future where it wasn't in pain from the quills B.) understood a human could help with it C.) decided that pain it would feel getting them pulled was worth the pain it would not feel in the future D.) was able to hold onto this abstract conception of the future as it underwent the pain and stayed through it because of a value judgement it made. I know it seems so obvious, but that says SO many things about how smart it is. Corvids are neat, is what I'm trying to say.

Ravens can remember and recognize human faces. You made a raven friend for life that day.
  • @EHAmos
She went to go pet it afterwards and it was like "YOU'VE DONE YOUR JOB, STAHP."

Raven yelled because you were shooting this vid vertically!

I never realized wild animals sought humans for help until I saw the whale caught in a fishing net on youtube. You are very fortunate  to be among the elite who have had the honor to assist one. Bravo! You should be proud!
