高知県南西部、土佐清水を代表する足摺岬から北西へおよそ25km、風光明媚なビーチに隣接するのが竜串海岸です。
足摺宇和海国立公園に属し、かつ日本初の海域公園に指定された「竜串海域公園」内に属するこの海岸は、およそ2,000～1,500万年もの昔に堆積した砂岩や泥炭層が風化や海蝕によって削り出した天下の奇岩奇勝スポットです。
竜串の名の由来は諸説あり、一つは上空から見た景観が横たわる竜を串刺しにしたような姿だったという説、もう一つはアイヌ語の「美しい所」を意味する「ツクシ」が転じたとする説、さらには竜串海岸の背後にそびえる臥竜山の呼び名が「竜（たつ）臥し（ふし）」から「たつくし」に転じたとする説が有力とされています。いずれにしても、奇岩が織り成す奇怪な光景はまるで竜が宿っているような、まさに“竜の眠る海岸”のようです。

I took a picture of the Ashizuri Undersea Museum with aerial photography.
Tatsukushi Beach is located in the southwestern part of Kochi Prefecture, about 25km northwest of Ashizuri Cape, which represents Tosashimizu, and is next to a scenic beach.
This coast belongs to Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park and is part of Tatsukushi Marine Park, Japan's first marine park. It is a scenic spot with strangely shaped rocks.
There are various theories about the origin of the name Tatsukushi, one of which is that the landscape seen from above resembles a skewed dragon lying on its side, and the other is that the Ainu word ``tsukushi'' means ``beautiful place''. Another theory is that the name of Mt. Garyu, which rises behind the Tatsukushi coast, changed from 'Tatsufushi' to 'Tatsukushi.' In any case, the bizarre scenery woven by strangely shaped rocks is just like the "shore where dragons sleep", as if a dragon dwells there.
