Even better still...... if you were wanting to split the board in 3, for instance, choose 9 on the tape, or 12, then mark 3 & 6 for 9, or 4 & 8 for 12 and so on.......

I learned this in my high school drafting class. You can use this method to quickly divide that cross distance into any number of equal distances, not just the halfway point (take that same 10 inches and mark each 2 = 5 even division across the board).
