If we are to look back to the passed decade and really think about South African hip hop influence in music and the culture at large, there is one name that stays at the top of mind. You can date it back from Entity, or being the first recipient of the 'New Comer of the Year' Hype award. Absolutely nobody saw it coming that an English rapper would rule the South African hip hop game, but then again, they should have used binoculars. It's been a SUPA MEGA decade, and as we step into a brand new one, it was only right that Scoop Makhathini catches the first wave with AKA.

Watching this interview and also being reminded that this champ is no more feels like I'm dreaming 💔💔 Long live SupaMega ✊🏾

I was a thirty something year old father to two of (in my opinion) coolest kids in my universe when I went to Musica and bought the Levels CD. I really bought it for my kids who were telling me this guy has bars for days. Up to that time, I only ever listened to US hip hop. I didn't think our guys had either the vocabulary or the authenticity to believably deliver the sound. 'Stop imitating the Americans' I would say. What transpired was that we'd sing along to the songs and I realised AKA was not trying to be anything other than purely South African. I loved his patriotic spirit and how he never backed down in defending SA at all costs. It's a pity his own people did him the way they did. He was one of the coolest kids in Africa.

He was so talented and gifty and if he should have lived longer he should have helped a lot of people
  • I want to encourage his brother & family to continue with the project and take it to higher levels. He left them the ideas. He is in a better place.

  • Supa Mega was always full of knowledge and a wholesome person in general. Watching all his interviews and performances thinking, "damn, we lost an icon". He still had a lot of gas in the tank and he had a lot of love for our country.🇿🇦 His music will forever be relevant. 🙌✨️ #LongLiveSupaMegaLiveLong
