The Story of Andrea Doria's Miracle Girl

Published 2019-09-06
The Andrea Doria became one of the most famous shipwrecks of the 20th century when it collided with the Stockholm on a foggy July night in 1956 off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.

Today we look at the bizarre and inspiring story of Linda Morgan, the 14-year-old girl who miraculously survived the Andrea Doria sinking after being scooped out of her bed by the very ship that sliced through the Andrea Doria’s hull. What's more, her rescuer aboard the Stockholm suddenly vanished after visiting her in the hospital.

  • I think they should make a movie about the Andrea Doria it was one of the greatest sea rescues of it’s time. I think it’s a great way to remember it cus soon there will be no more survivors to help tell the story anymore.

As a naval amateur historian and ocean liner "buff" I would say that SS Andrea Doria is actually a pretty well known shipwreck. But the most famous ships seem to be the ones that sank. So what about MS Stockholm? How many people actually know that she still sails as the oldest active former transatlantic ocean liner and the second oldest active ocean going passenger ship in the world? She now operates as a cruise ship and her current name is MV Astoria . Btw, Astoria is her 11th name, maybe this is a record too.
  • I sailed on the Doria circa 1952. As an avid young explorer on many steam ships of that era I would roam those great ships independently and spend my time checking each deck from stern to bow. Even as a 7 year-old I sensed many things weren't quite right with the Doria. It sat unusually high in the water and made awful creaking sounds as it sailed. My sister and I occupied the same cabin that was destroyed during the collision with the Stockholm in 1956.
  • Great video. Thanks for sharing. I too find shipwrecks and anything about the sea fascinating. I knew about the Andrea Doria and Linda's story ever since I was a kid. My mom was pregnant with me when the Doria sank. I was born in December of 1956. (Jan Griffiths).

Linda Morgan's story and the Andrea Doria were actually shown in a book called, 'Lost Liners' which shows the many liners that were lost, starting with Titanic. I loved that book and was partially the reason I looked into ship classes for liners and cruise ships. Edit: It was actually called 'Ghost Liners.'

Wow how the world is so small and so connected. I live in San Antonio. Obviously know the hardberger name as it’s associated with many things here such as parks , businesses, etc. And always just so curious about this specific wreck for all the reasons you stated

in July 1956, actress Ruth Roman (who had been under contract at Warner Brothers) had just finished a trip to Europe with her son Richard, who was three years old at the time. At the port of Cannes, they boarded the Italian passenger liner SS Andrea Doria as First Class passengers for their return trip home to the United States. On the night of July 25, the Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish passenger liner MS Stockholm. Ruth was in the Belvedere Lounge when the collision happened and immediately took off her high heels and scrambled back to her cabin barefoot to retrieve her sleeping son. Several hours later she and the other passengers were evacuated from the sinking liner. Richard was lowered first into a waiting lifeboat, and before she could follow the lifeboat departed. Ruth stepped into the next boat and was eventually rescued along with 750 other survivors from the Andrea Doria by the French passenger liner SS Ile de France. Richard was rescued by the Stockholm and was reunited with his mother in New York. Another actress who was onboard the SS Andrea Doria was Betsy Drake, she was returning from visiting her husband film actor Gary Grant who was filming The Pride And The Passion on location in Spain.

What a fascinating story, and ... Thank you for sharing this!
  • Fascinating story indeed, made all the more gripping because it is true
  • I have somehow developed an immense fear of things that deal with water, oceanic voyages in particular. It would seem that this story has been at the core of this fear. Thank you for giving light to what has been a dark corner of my psyche, although I will continue to not book passage on any cruise anytime soon.

Another interesting footnote, a one off custom built show car, the Chrysler Norseman, went down on this ship. It was a gorgeous concept car that had a unique cantilever roof, with no A-pillar.
  • I read about this in a book of shipwrecks once and was FLOORED by how long it took to sink. If only Titanic could have had 11 hours.
  • @VapautSG
Do you know how terrifying it most have been for Joan? I don’t know if she survived the collision but if she did I can’t imagine how she felt falling into the Atlantic at night.
  • @arlendavis
I found this very interesting. Read a book on the sinking in the mid 60s when I was 16 about 10 years after the accident. Was nice to know what happened to the "Miracle Girl".
  • Good show, brilliant channel Captain. How you say, the sound effects and her chilly scream are a bit discerning. The music however, was right proper. Cheers..

I remember watching the show when the safe was recovered from the Andrea Doria in 1984. What a clown show. It was cool to watch the divers at work and the retelling of the story. The one thing I won't forget was that the wife of the head of the operation was running around the set acting like a prima donna. Of course the safe had jack squat in it-like Geraldo Rivera's, Al Capone vault fiasco.
