This song is turning 40 years old but a lot of this still holds true today wtf

This song ended up in the library of Congress it's an historical hiphop artifact. Imagine that.

8 foster homes, 2 group homes and a whole lot of pain at a young age. This song woke me up immediately and changed my life. Thank you Grandmaster.

This song doesn't just meet the Gold Standard of Hip Hop. It IS the Gold Standard.
  • This was the first reality rap song. Not just a party song, a real life depiction of what was really going on. Was a true game changer.

This song is a masterpiece. It transcends musical genre.

This song totally moves me. Is it just me or is it these lyrics? "A child is born, with no state of mind Blind to the ways of mankind God is smilin' on you, but he's frownin' too Because only God knows, what you'll go through"
  • I remember buying this on cassette and I got in a lot of trouble for having it. my parents were die hard country western fans. I hid it in a crawl space outside my house. It was winter time and I put my coat on, popped conway twitty in my Walkman and went outside and grabbed the cassette from my hiding space and sat in a snow bank listening to this many times lol ahhh memories lol

You know its good when everyone can understand the words.

All these years later, nothing has changed.

People today have no idea how influential this song is. When this was new this style of music was hated and demonized by everyone. MTV wouldn't even play rap/hip-hop until 1983. Nothing has done more to bridge the gap between blacks and whites than what happened in this era. The impact this song and what it represents in today's culture is impossible to calculate.

The song really told the reality of 70s &80s, and how the rest of America tried to cover it up like it didn't exist. And it even relates to what's going now.

When real music told a story everyone could understand đź’Ł

The greatest verse in hip hop history @ 3:44-4:53! A child is born with no state of mind, blind to the ways of mankind. God's smiling on you but he's frowning too, cause only God knows what you'll go through. That shit should be recited in literature books!

2:13 "Got a bum education, double digits inflation, can't take a train to the job, there's a strike at the station." I was about 7 when I first heard The Message and it was the very first rap song I remember listening too. This verse is what made me fall in love with rap.
  • still the best and wow old NYC! truly artistic from start to finish..........Its like a jungle sometimes ...and the beats. so ahead of his time. pre crack too.
