ICAA Travel Revisited: The Turrets in Bar Harbor, Maine, with Sargent C. Gardiner

Published 2021-09-21
Sargent C. Gardiner, partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects, journeys to Mount Desert Island on the coast of Maine to tour The Turrets, a Gilded Age summer home in Bar Harbor. Presented by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA), the series ICAA Travel Revisited celebrates travel and the exploration of the world's great destinations for architecture and design.

The town of Bar Harbor, and its lush surroundings on Mount Desert Island on the coast of Maine, boasts some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country. This of course attracted the attention of the nation's most powerful families, who flocked to the island beginning in the 1870's to build their coastal retreats. The Turrets is a notable example of these summer homes - a grand, massive granite house designed by prominent New York architect Bruce Price for wealthy Cincinnati businessman John J. Emery in 1895. Now situated on the campus of the College of the Atlantic, the house's design still offers valuable lessons in architectural style, and in using local materials to adapt classical design to its surrounding context.
