The Ohio Lunatic Asylum was destroyed in 1991 but the final resting place of its patients still remain. Join me and my friend Kim as we pay our respects to some of history’s most mistreated & misunderstood people at these long forgotten cemeteries in Columbus, Ohio.

My sister was there because she tried to commit suicide. They electrified her. My mom went and got her and now she is really mental! She died at the age of 44. R.I..P. Carol. I love and miss you every day!

It's pretty appalling how the state has forgotten about these and left the area to be forgotten and used for dumping.

So nice you paid your respects to those forgotten....very important that you mentioned not to go alone--this holds true in most cases--be safe...

Just found your video. It was wonderful. My friends grandmother was there and buried in the first cemetery you filmed. She died in 1951. It is nice to know Kim read all the tombstones. Thank you.
  • Kim, that was so kind to stop & give each person attention. I learned my Great-Grandmother on my Mother's side spent some time here at the Asylum. My Mom always wanted to know why but we could never find the records for her admittance. She's buried in Reynoldsburg at Silent Home Cemetery, Also, for a few years I worked at Loewendick Demolition. They razed (demolished) the former Asylum. Other things of note, we the locals always called this the "Hilltop". Also, my Mom told me that one of her high school field trips was to the Asylum. That's so strange! Why in the world would a school take a field trip to the "Hilltop"? Remember, her saying how much it had an impact on her. Don't think she knew at that time that her Grandmother had spent time there. Also, didn't know this cemetery existed & the cousin (Dad's side) I mentioned being buried at Greenlawn Cemetery was a RN at the newest mental health hospital located here. Small world that keeps on revolving.

Very Interesting! My Dad’s family is from Ohio and I currently live about 33 miles from Columbus. He had a grandfather who passed away at the Athens Insane Asylum from syphilis of the brain. Later in my life, my ex-mother in law spent a great deal of time in and out of psychiatric hospitals in the early 70’s. She underwent many courses of electro shock therapy. Poor souls…
  • Right directly behind Twin Valley Hospital is the graveyard you were looking for. The public cannot access this cemetery due to the Maximus Security Mental Hospital is right beside it. I worked at Twin Valley and I was given access to go back there in 2003. The graves are only marked with patient numbers and the Specimen marker is there. I took pictures of it. The original mental hospital was located on Broad Street right where the freeway is now. it burned in 1876. The second cemetery you were in is the graveyard of the first mental health hospital. You'd think that since these people were in State Cemeteries, the State would take care of them instead of forgetting they even existed. Shame on the State of Ohio. You should be ashamed.

Probably cement vaults were too expensive... so coffin collapse is why there are indentations ....

I wish someone would go through and trim with a weed eater around each little stone with serial numbers. I love how she stopped to give each patient recognition. Thank you for your investigations and sharing.

The second cemetery you visited was also used by the Ohio Penitentiary to bury those who had been executed or died in prison so a lot of the graves (the ones from the 20th century in particular) are penal burials

Specimens!!! Been there to see that one!
  • @joesneon
Creepy!! A lot of "treatments" gone wrong.
  • @jaycee330
The "Specimen" grave is in the first cemetery (behind the Heliport)
  • @user-hi7ur7so5d
Specimens is in the first cemetery you visited, in the area with the raised headstones. It’s the same size and shape as all the others so you have to specifically check every one until you find it.

What a sad sad place. Great video 👍
  • I found your channel from the Thurmond, WV video and I am definitely adding it to my travel list. I live in Ohio and we recently visited Hanoverton, OH (if you haven't been there you need to go, lookup Spread Eagle Tavern) and they have a really great cemetery with a lot of history. It was very sad to see the graves so overgrown in this video and although most weren't overgrown in Hanoverton, they were broken. My Wife and I spent a few hours this past October picking up the pieces and standing them back up. It was really rewarding. Keep doing what you're doing! I subbed on both of my accounts to make sure I don't miss the next video.

So sad to see them grown over. Another example of disrespect of these souls, as well as the other cemeteries that have been forgotten.
  • @Dizsumboosheet
Yes 😭 we can see the spaces on the ground. Knowing there are so many of those bricks in that grass would drive me insane. Do old records exist for the ones with just the serial numbers?
