This is the brief history of the Boers. Something never really covered by anybody. The the word Boer is mispronounced, we sort of recorded it using Siri and was realised afterwards that it was incorrect. Thanks, sorry for any inconvenience

  • I'm glad the Concentration camps were not left out ( as usual ) in this history. It played a major role in the Boeren surrendering.
  • I go to a British school and the teachers always leave out the fact that boers were put in concentration camps
  • My geat-grandfather, Koot Swanepoel was interred in Aliwal-North concentration camp from the age of 10 to the age of 13, his younger brother was 7 years old when they went in and 10 when they were released. The fact that the descendants of these people are still alive can only be summarized as follows: "Take a community of Dutchmen of the type of those who defended themselves for fifty years against all the power of Spain at a time when Spain was the greatest power in the world. Intermix with them a strain of those inflexible French Huguenots who gave up home and fortune and left their country for ever at the time of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The product must obviously be one of the most rugged, virile, unconquerable races ever seen upon earth. Take this formidable people and train them for seven generations in constant warfare against savage men and ferocious beasts, in circumstances under which no weakling could survive, place them so that they acquire exceptional skill with weapons and in horsemanship, give them a country which is eminently suited to the tactics of the huntsman, the marksman, and the rider. Then, finally, put a finer temper upon their military qualities by a dour fatalistic Old Testament religion and an ardent and consuming patriotism. Combine all these qualities and all these impulses in one individual, and you have the modern Boer—the most formidable antagonist who ever crossed the path of Imperial Britain. Our military history has largely consisted in our conflicts with France, but Napoleon and all his veterans have never treated us so roughly as these hard-bitten farmers with their ancient theology and their inconveniently modern rifles.” - Arthur Conan Doyle
  • So the British signed a peace treaty but invaded because of gold ....
  • Me: DON'T SAY IT, PLEASE DON'T SAY IT!! Them: "Bore" ... Me: Deep sigh
  • My great grandfather was in the Boer War, he was Irish but joined the Canadian regiment and worked with horses (his family bred Irish horses). He wrote that the Boers were some of the greatest people he had ever met.

Afrikaaner here, thanks for this video. Was fun watching it!
  • White South Africans will always divide themselves between English and Afrikaans because of this.
  • I love reading about history, but sometimes it’s nice to listen to someone explain it to you. Love this channel!
  • @AJMerrick
Hey everyone, thanks for watching! Next video...... wait for it... THE MONGOLS
  • Good history lesson. The English pronunciations of the Afrikaans/Dutch words just always feel hard on my ears.
  • God I love history in the 1800s through early 1900.. especially Napoleanic times. I feel that the events of and after Napoleon basically set the stage for the start of WW1 which then lead to WW2 having a huge impact of geopolitics as we know them today. But these can't be learned without understanding the age of discovery and the Imperial colonization by all the great powers of that time. It's rather amazing to me that the fact a group of Dutch farmers settling in South Africa over 300 years ago still has an effect on local and geopolitics in that area today
  • After watching a couple of videos on the Boers War, this is by far the clearest. Very well done.
  • my great great grandmother escaped a British concentration camp pregnant with my great grand mother on hoerseback in the dead of night. true family history
  • Also interesting to note Winston Churchill was a prisoner of war in Pretoria where he eventually escaped from the Boers by swimming across the Bobbejaans River.
  • The regiment in which I belong to (Lord Strathconas Horse Royal Canadian) first overseas wars were against the Boers, and were in fact part of a private military, later annexed by the government of Canada.
  • Great sum up, thanks for getting some of our history out there
