Welding Safety: Personal Protective Equipment

Published 2020-07-28
Protect yourself! Wear the appropriate respirator and personal protective equipment.

Welders, like fireman, must wear clothing to keep them from being burned. Arc rays can burn your skin and eyes in just a few minutes of exposure. Use your personal protective equipment to weld safely.

For most general purpose SMAW and GMAW a welding helmet with a shade #10 is used, in fact most fixed shade (passive) helmets come with a #10 lens. Auto darkening helmets can be fixed shade with #10, or have adjustable, 9 -13 is common but higher end helmets have a wider range such as #5 - #14 or thereabouts.

Infrared heat can definitely be detected. It's called radiant heat. That's how you get hot when sitting at a fireplace.

Don’t use dirty earplugs? My fingers make them dirty when I put them in! Lol
  • Does welding damage your eyes over time EVEN with ALL the proper ppe and its correct use? I just started welding and will be welding for 3 months only. Will my eyes be ok long term if I only weld for 3 months? Im 35.
