Welders, like fireman, must wear clothing to keep them from being burned. Arc rays can burn your skin and eyes in just a few minutes of exposure. Use your personal protective equipment to weld safely.

For most general purpose SMAW and GMAW a welding helmet with a shade #10 is used, in fact most fixed shade (passive) helmets come with a #10 lens. Auto darkening helmets can be fixed shade with #10, or have adjustable, 9 -13 is common but higher end helmets have a wider range such as #5 - #14 or thereabouts.

Infrared heat can definitely be detected. It's called radiant heat. That's how you get hot when sitting at a fireplace.

Does welding damage your eyes over time EVEN with ALL the proper ppe and its correct use? I just started welding and will be welding for 3 months only. Will my eyes be ok long term if I only weld for 3 months? Im 35.
