  • In my kilted wedding, we did exactly that. My mother and daughter wore our family's tartan sash, and my father donned my bride with the same sash right before we were announced as Husband and Wife. It was a simple and meaningful gesture for us.

My Japanese wife and I did many of the things you talked about in our wedding in Tokyo. I was in my full Prince Charlie w/ fly plaid and she started in a standard white dress. I had my 7-year old daughter from my first marriage wrap a tartan sash (Johnston ancient) around our hands and after we said our vows, I pinned it across her shoulder. Our Japanese guests were fascinated by the whole thing & I spent much of the dinner explaining what I was wearing, the history of Clan Johnston (including the “Lockerbie Lick” of course) and everything Scottish/American.

Here in Scotland it’s only really the men who wear traditional dress as in a Kilt. But the bride most just wear a modern white wedding dress, my wife did. There was nothing she wore to give away she’s Scottish or a Scottish Bride.
  • These are great ideas and definitely should be incorporated into weddings. The only ceremonial things around tartans in the church is the "Kirking of the Tartans" in the Presbyterian Church.
  • Glad I found this video. You guys always have very nice informative videos and I appreciate it. We are planning a wedding for next year and we plan to go to Scotland to get married. I’d also like to add some Celtic traditions to the ceremony.

At my daughter's wedding, my mother who is our family matriarch stood and gave her blessing during the ceremony, basically giving the bride away and also accepting the groom into the family, the groom's father as the patriarch of their family did the same. my daughter and son in law wanted this instead of the who gives this woman in marriage tradition. I think it was a wonderful way to honor both families and how we are now all family and forever linked.
  • I would recommend thought before having the mother of the groom put on the sash as she will most likely be bawling lol

From the traditional clan perspective, should the bride’s gown be cut from her father’s clan tartan or her fiancée’s?

In true scottish fashion, I just stole my wife right out of my father-in-law's house, went out of country and when we came back, she was pregnant with our first 🤣🤣🤣

Scottish brides rarely wear tartan. Being scottish in the highlands this is very rare.

Hi guys! Question for ya. I like the idea of presenting the bride with my clan tartan. Do you think it would work with a fly plaid? Example, if I’m wearing my fly plaid and in part of the ceremony, remove it and place it around her like a sash, do you think that could work?
