Join us as Matt drives the C63 Black Series and M3 CSL back to back in North Wales on a cold December day. Both are the type of cars that are fairly subtle in their appearance but as a petrolhead, if you know, you know.

We are not here to pick a winner, both are too different, we are here to celebrate two magnificent engines the likes of which we just don't see in new cars, and of course to find out if they deserve to be labelled as modern day icons.

Which of these two would you pick? Let us know 👇

I own an E46 M3 (non-CSL) and I must say, it is my most favorite car I’ve ever owned
  • I owned M3 e46, M3 e92 and M2 and I would give them all to have E46 CSL, this car is mind blowing!
  • What a fantastic film! Loved every minute! So great to see another CSL that is being enjoyed after one of our conversion.

The CSL was one of Burkhard Göschel's proudest moments, he himself acknowledges that. Great Video. Atb.

I absolutely love the M3 CSL. It's really on a diet. And the sound is fantastic.

"the whole car comes together! its the ultimate driving experience!" that is why the e46 is a living legend - every thing in that car is designed for that car with a type of quality, prestige and purpose you do not find anymore.. the E46 is too good of a car to keep BMW making money- since then planned obsolescence, cheap plastic, less attention to detail ... BMW needs to continue driving up revenue & having a true ultimate driving machine would keep people too satisfied and unwilling to buy a new car. E46 was the last of a generation

The M156 6.2 V8 is probably the best V8 ever made. I am a huge BMW M Fanboy, but previously owned a W204 C63 and the engine is epic. The C63 Black is my favourite AMG car.

CLK 63 Black Series: Am I a joke to you??
  • @StarMan_1367
I don't just pick this M3 over the C63, I pick the M3 over any car! This is my favourite car of all time.
  • Matt: we are not here to compare. Also Matt: This M3 is the best car I have ever driven. Great video. ;)
  • @longtailgt
Love both cars!! They're so different that it's wrong to compare them indeed. But I will say this: the CSL's looks and especially the exhaust sound puts a huuuggee smile on my face!

Nice review Matt. Those B roads look like a lot of fun. I recently reviewed the M3 CSL alongside the M2 CS and was surprised, like you, at how entertaining it was. I owned one back in 2010/2011 and didn't fall in love with it then, but cars have got a lot heavier over the last 10 years! I'd be interested to try it with the manual box. I owned a C63 BS in red with comfort spec and loved the engine, but found the suspension way too firm to use as a daily driver. Happy New Year gents.
  • Can’t believe he didn’t use the M Track mode on the CSL. He wouldn’t have had that on or off problem he complained about.
  • @IULENZA
The CSL for the drive, the BS for the madness. Probably the best and last true BMW and Benz ever made.
  • @mixmaster09777
Good work Matt 👍🏻 Great presenter with bags of enthusiasm and knowledge. Really enjoyed that thanks alot. CSL all day long for me and with a manual conversion WOW
  • The natural rival to an e46 csl 6m is an nsx r. Both manual, both port-injected 3.2L 6 cylinders both peerless, timeless legends on chassis that transcended everything before them mated to bullet-proof powertrains than sonically escalated towards 8000 with a measured yet relentless escalation that will never be sensed again..
