The thing is- all education needs to be managed and reformed- home school should be regulated in a way that they still have to meet the standards of k-12, and the homeschool child should be able to attend university after, public schools should be more like 4-6 hours a day instead of 8-9, teaching the truth of the world as well as preparing them for life after 18, and colleges should be affordable if not free, we shouldn’t have to repeat courses we’ve completed in k-12, and should have more of a trade school method. There’s so many different aspects to look at

Hey! So I haven’t had the chance to listen to all of this. I have to listen in increments ‘cause of the kids 😂 anyway, I used to work as a mental health therapist in public schools out in CA and I remember thinking how depressing some of the school settings were—not even the learning aspect of it, but the peer interactions, the food, the visuals of the buildings and outdoor play areas—it’s was just sad looking. When Anthony and I were dating I told him that I’m going to be a SAHM and I’m homeschooling my kids—and so here we are lol Saylor is three and we are already working on spelling, she puts 48-piece puzzles together, she knows all the names of the states in the US and where they are on a map, she knows the parts of the human cell, she knows basic addition and subtraction, she can explain to you what a nebula is, etc lol She knows so much shit it’s crazy haha and most of it I taught her just from playing, reading books, being outside a lot and taking her places. All that to say though, it’s a lot of work and sacrifice on my end. Like, all of my day is centered around her and Deker and making sure both of them are getting what they need. Obviously Deker is at a different stage of learning than saylor, so I have to make sure they both get my individual time to help them reach their goals—so it can be a lot. We also make sure saylor is involved in activities outside of the home—she’s in gymnastics and we take her to the Home Depot and Lowe’s building workshop, she has a season pass to the aquarium, we live next to a nature center, Anthony takes her to sports game stuff, I set up play dates with her, etc. again, at least in my setup, all of it falls on me and Anthony, which works for us because we have the personality for it—idk if everyone does to be honest haha you have to have a lot of patience and self-motivation, I think. Or for the way we do it at least. Also, I think some kids need the public/private school system for reasons outside of educational purposes. Again, being a mental health therapist in schools, school was a retreat for some of these kids. Their home lives were so stressful that school was their only reprieve. I guess that’s a whole different conversation, but it’s not all bad and homeschooling isn’t for every family. If my parents would’ve homeschooled me in the environment that they cultivated, I’d probably be really depressed. But, all that to say, parents should have options either way. 😊

Do you think it is really either/or? Or could there be nuance here? That we need to integrate more personalized, intergenerational values in mainstream education and empower parents as the experts of their children WITHOUT necessarily throwing out the whole institution of public education?
  • @Heysaywhatnow
Such a great video and conversation, so important. Thanks ladies!!

I don’t want to sound insensitive, just confused! I’m not sure if I missed something (I’m not on instagram anymore). But you said “teach him, or them God willing we have more children”. Aren’t you pregnant? I’m so sorry if something happened and this is weird ❤ or was this filmed pre pregnancy? I just was confused. Love you Nikki!
  • @jaymekilgannon_
Absolutely loved this video! We don't have kids yet but when we do, we will 100% be home schooling. Really appreciate this conversation! 🧡🧡🙏🙏
  • Hi Nikki! Could you list out the books you two referenced in the video, please?
  • @monty1434
Nikki thank you sharing this!! I’ve shared with all my friends who are parents 🙏🏻❤️

Hey Nikki 💓 love that you're talking about this :) you're such a bright light in this community I love to hear your thoughts and opinions on real life topics. I hope you and your family are doing well. Love ya 🤗🤗
  • What was the documentary about Sunday school, Nikki! Would love to know. Our school put elementary age children together, so I have my kids all in the same class, while in family church they get so uneasy 😂 they don’t want to just sit and hear.
  • @WondaElizabeth
This is totally random and has nothing to do with the important subject of homeschooling, but her voice is so melodically soothing. Like, I could listen to her all day. Now back to the video.
  • @madelynstott8462
I’m sure you’re gonna document the whole thing since you wouldn’t adopt the baby since you were not going to be able to use them as a prop to gain more followers. Real gem
  • Thanks nikki! Would you please link the article you referenced throughout the podcast? Or post search terms? I'd like to read into this
