Published 2024-07-15
The time has come for Northern California to bid farewell to Union Pacific 4014, AKA Big Boy. Big boy arrived this passed Thursday, July 11, 2024 (LINK BELOW TO SEE ARRIVAL) apart of its "Westward Bound Tour"

After being on display to the public at Union Pacific's Roseville yard for two days, it's time for Big Boy to depart back home east to Cheyenne, Wyoming, U.S.A. Thus ending its tour time here in Northern California.Big Boy departed Roseville early Sunday morning on July 14th, 2023.

Although trouble strikes...literally, at Auburn, California, U.S.A. Big Boy struck a tree causing some concerning damage, breaking a cylinder. Luckily Union Pacific's Steam Crew and others were able to rectify the situation quickly to be back on the move for a little over 3 hour delay.

Now we can begin to follow and chase Big Boy out of Auburn, through Donner Pass, out towards Truckee, into the state of Nevada and finally into Reno/Sparks, Nevada to end it's run to the day. Where it will continue east to Cheyenne the next couple days.

  • You are only one today who showed why the train was late. Going to meet train in Lovelock tomorrow, no trees near tracks out here.

Love your SBTB Intro with the Ace cab car. The engineer (also a railfan) in that photo is Will Ayers, who passed away over a year ago. He was my childhood friend in San Diego. It brought a tear to my eye when I saw that. Aside from that, great shots of 4014.

This is why the baggage cars directly behind the loco. The steam crew carry their portable steam repair shop on tour. So in cases like this, they can make needed repairs on site!

Oh to have been a passenger in that observation car like back in the old days aboard the 4449 several times, private cars and the 2472 for the centennial of North meeting South after the completion of the tunnels on Cuesta grade! Fun times galore!!!

Looks like the front right lower step on the side of the cowcatcher broke off from hitting the tree!
  • Strange how a tree just happened to fall so near the tracks..... Especially since crews have gone through there.

It amazes me that they brag about this being the BIGGEST ENGINE EVER but they didn't go out along the tracks to check for and obstacles, like? TREES.????

19:43.....everyone gathering up their coins they laid on the tracks for souvenirs!! Ah, but whose coin is whose after they get tossed here and there by the wheels??
