Think the blackbook thing you mentioned is very important. My brothers black books back in the day were filled with random shit. It contained sketches, work from others but also some biting. Whole point of the blackbook was to PRACTISE. It's NOT a holy bible that you are making for yourself, treat the blackbook like a regular piece of paper. Being inspired by people doesn't mean you have to copy / bite however sometimes drawing other styles can help connect the dots of that one part of flavour you want to add and make your own.

Flip the Script is also a great book about hand Styles. It was out of print for a long time until not long ago.
