Video game Easter eggs are usually harmless references that aren't meant to offend anyone, however, in some cases the whole point of an Easter egg is to take a shot at another game.

Here are 11 video game Easter eggs that roast the competition.

I actually like the “legally distinct” names of Leon and Chris, as “Leon Keenedy” and “Chris Bluefield” are both still referencing their Resident Evil counterparts while also poking a bit of fun at Capcom’s lawyers getting angry at Techland over this Easter egg.

GTA San Andreas has an easter egg for Driv3r. Theres a mission where you need to sneak into someone's mansion, and you walk by two dudes playing a game, and they say something along the lines of "Damn reflections really messed up, Tanner you suck!"
  • The MGS3 easter egg reminds me of that Cutscene from one of the Ghost Recon game where Sam Fisher learns he's the last of the Stealth game heroes. I believe he references Snake in that same cutscene by calling him the guy with the eyepatch, although I could be wrong in the wording

The ape escape series was the best!!! I love that you can play MGS as an ape!

Episode 3 of Duke 3D takes a shot at Quake as well. An earthquake will occur, with Duke stating: "I ain't afraid of no Quake."
  • @farantir
8:56 The Horse "Binky" could also be a reference to Terry Pratchetts Discworld Novels. Binky is a white horse owned by Death.

The original Shadow Warrior, from 97, also had a Lara Croft Easter Egg. In fact, there are two separate versions of the Easter Egg. Both versions have Lara Croft chained to a wall, with Lo Wang saying "She's raided her last tomb!" In the original shareware version of the game, this Easter Egg had Lara's clothes almost completely torn off, leaving her half naked. She also had large, anime styled eyes. However, later versions of the game changed this. Her pose while chained up was different, and she looked more on brand with her design. She was also fully clothed.

It's been a while since I played Duke Nukem 3D but I'm pretty sure in one of the levels there's an earthquake and Duke says something like "I ain't afraid of no quake.", which is clearly a jab at id Softwares game of the same name, which was released just a few months after Duke.

The moment you said "three Duke Nukem easter eggs" I knew what the last one was. Dunno why, but Duke's insults always manage to live rent free in my head.

The Roach reference is not only about Roach but about a certain stuffed unicorn that was used for... things, ahem...
  • @MilkmanMedia
I don't know if you've ever covered this one, but you should cover the boundary limit animation from Splashdown Rides Gone Wild. The player gets thrown by a Kraken. There's a few other easter eggs/references in that classic too.

Also Ape Escape 3 had a mini game where you played as a monkey version of Solid Snake called Mesal Gear Solid. Was pretty awesome
  • @nazemec
9:25 Geralt of Riviera? Who's that? A pretender of Geralt of Rivia? :P Although I doubt Yennefer would have suggested anything for Roach, she's not a unicorn... That's what was hinted by the easter egg. Those who know, know.

Here's a cool detail. In the last of us part two Ellie loses her 2 of her fingers in the final chapter of the game, she is therefore unable to play certain notes in the epilogue of the game.
  • @DeadEye42069
The duke nuke em references were tasteful given the tone of the games
  • @blueninja8094
stuffing the horse is probably a reference to the stuffed unicorn scene with Yen
  • Pretty sure the line in the witcher easter egg about the horse being stuffed is also a reference to the fact that they reference in game (not sure about the books) that they have some sort of kink with a stuffed unicorn.

4:15 if you interact with the payphone you'll get a NSFW moaning and Duke can be heard saying "Ooh Lara, is that you?" Also a Tomb Raider reference.
