As the earliest Category 5 storm ever observed in the Atlantic carves a path of destruction through the Caribbean, we get an update on damage from Hurricane Beryl from the prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, where the storm hit Tuesday. He describes the disaster scenes he witnessed and discusses the rising challenge of extreme weather fueled by the climate crisis. “The developed countries, the major emitters, are not taking this matter seriously,” says Gonsalves. He says the world must dramatically reduce emissions and that the current political and economic system is “driving all of us towards, if not extinction, to a terrible, inhospitable place called Earth.”

Someone who's concerned with and prioritizing the biggest problem facing humanity. How rare.
  • Hello everyone, I'm reaching out for assistance in replacing my mom's roof that was torn off by hurricane Bryle in St.Vincent and the Grenadines. We're in need of roofing materials to restore her home. While I don't need cash donations, any help in sourcing or contributing towards roofing materials would be immensely appreciated. Thank you so much for your support!
  • Despite the widespread destruction, it's important to remain grateful and optimistic about the future. Unfortunately, I have been unable to reach my family in Layou due to the power outage and lack of internet connectivity. It's distressing not being able to check on the well-being of our loved ones during this challenging time.☹️😰
  • Lawd. SVG can't get a break. Volcano, now a hurricane. Ralph is the second best prime minister, in the region. I would hope that when they rebuild, it will not be the same old, same old. It is time to upgrade the houses to withstand at least hurricanes. The whole Caribbean need to not rebuild, but Improve housing. Using the funds they collect.. plant more trees, protect the rivers, stop the fishing. This is a good leader right here. I wish them all the best

May God continue to provide comfort and provide their needs of my people in St.Vincent and the Grenadines. And the surrounding Caribbean islands. Lord have mercy on them all.
  • A sober voicec(and what a voice!) in a screwed up humanity. Let's get our shit together now...for earth's sake!

Rebuild plans should include at risk land appropriation to ensure no settlement in low lying areas at risk for permanent flooding and sea level rise. Infrastructure planning needs to account the new reality of sea level rise and weather extremes.
