Steinbeck: “East of Eden” book review

Published 2020-04-14
Book ends more around 1920 not 1940, I miss spoke. John Steinbeck did a monumental job with this book and I’d recommend to everyone for its foundational archetypal themes... especially Americans to have a better understanding yourselves particularly.

  • East of Eden is my safety blanket book. I always come back to it when I get overwhelmed. As an Irish person I found Steinbecks interpretation of the "irishness" of the Hamiltons to be very moving and more true of any writer I've ever read. "the Irish have a dark shadow over them, let them laugh too long it sticks a long finger down their throats" Steinbeck could interpret a person like no other. Really liked your review

I loved how cathy was written and how her psychology was laid out throughout different stages of her life from early childhood to her very last thoughts on earth. Not sure if steinbeck meant it within narrative but in my interpretation she was a person who clearly struggled with antisocial personality disorder and lack of empathy. I know the story is structured in a way where we're supposed to be against her but I couldn't help but feel bad for how remote and isolated figure she was. Hung up on desctruction of humankind and escape from it all at once. Truly a stand out, one of a kind character. Cathy remained my favorite over the years. Intelligent, sad and twisted soul.

Just finished this book and it is absolutely beautiful. I too resonated with Cal the most and he was by far my favorite character. I’m delighted to find out that he is the main character who is played by James Dean in the film adaptation. I always thought James was playing Adam lol. I plan on watching that later. My fave part of the book was when Cal was praying and crying to God at night asking to “not be mean” and “well liked”. That part fucking BROKE me. So many of us have had turbulent childhoods/youths that were often spawned by our desire to be liked and accepted. 🤷🏿‍♂️❤️

I love how you reviewed East of Eden in nature, really adds to it. Found your channel just now and you just gained another subscriber, love how you speak of Steinbeck. Fair to say I'm in love with John, he just has a way of knowing exactly how to describe people.

Your reviews are great man, I’ve watched your other vids, specifically on Dostoevsky. I just finished this novel and it felt special because I grew up near Salinas and the surrounding areas. An aspect of the book that I got to experience was seeing these locations in my mind as Steinbeck described them, and it’s the most vivid imagery I’ve been able to visualize while reading, which made the story feel much more real. While most of my enjoyment came from the incredible plot and cast of characters, I definitely recommend reading a book that takes place near your hometown, or somewhere that is very important to you. It’s unlike reading foreign authors, and is a really enjoyable experience.

I read the book the same year this was posted in 2020. This book is rooted near my heart and Steinbeck is an incredible author. I also read Of Mice and Men and that book broke me. What I love most about the book is the highlighted word of Timshel or choice. Goodness is not inherited but is rather a choice. It is our choice on how we define ourselves and how we make out of our past mistakes, regrets, and sins. Please post more reviews! Also, do you have any meaningful philosophical recommendations?

I really enjoyed your review. I can see you struggling to know just what to say about this book: I do just the same. Strangely enough, you look A LOT like what I picture Cal looking like in the story! I kept thinking of that during your review.

Hi Jay! I loved your review of this book and your thoughts on the book. I've just started a channel which is a first impressions look at books. I've just uploaded my own thoughts on East of Eden (https://youtu.be/OOUW8V0pM1w). I'd love to know whether you think Cathy is 'evil'? And whether such a thing exists in the book? I'd be stoked if you'd be able to view it. Keep up the great work!!!!
