This is my history. Big mama (greatgranny) drove a horse drawn mule from AR to Chicago in the early 1900s. My dad was born in Chicago 1925 and I in 1960.The church was our foundation. Thanks big mama. We love you.

I love the old songs/hymns. They bring me peace. Everything does not need to be modern.

Im white european, quite nationalistic who grew up catholic, but when I listening gospel music I just feel the beauty and how something powerful is touching my soul in the deepest part. Its almost like the africanamerican people that were enslave were really able and truely connect on the primal teaching of Jesus much deeper and much autentic to really point the esence of it.

This was a good watch for me ❤️ I enjoy watching black history.. Blacks have been through so much but we still love and lift up God!
  • For our Historians may God continue to give them wisdom as they expose the truth, hopefully this generation can take heed and show some interest in what really matters in our community.

I lived in East Chatham in Chicago. My grandparents went to Grace Presbyterian Church in Ida B Wells Homes. Ms Jackson lived around the corner from us. She had a garden in her front lawn, which would be very smart. When my sister and I would pass her house she would call us over to help her. I was probably around 10 or 11. It was before the Dan Ryan expressway was built. Good memories 😊

I'm from Detroit, and recall Detroit being called, The Gospel Capital of the World, in the 80's, when so many groups and singers were making so many hits. Some of the greatest of all time have come from the Motor City, but we all owe it to the Windy City, Chicago? Awesome!

4:17 HEARING THEM SINGING IN YORUBA LANGUAGE GAVE ME CHILLS!!!! 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳
  • I never knew country music was from blacks, you guys did a lot, thankyou for the rhythm and dance you gave the world
  • I’ve been that guy so depressed and alone sitting in a nasty motel room with a loaded gun under my chin asking myself if I wanted to make it to the next day. I got on my hands in knees and cried out loud in prayer rebuking the devil and praying for Jesus to remove anything that was not of him. I made it out of that motel alive, and with continued prayer and due diligence I am 100% a believer and saved.

I just want to give a shout out to WTTW. I don’t know if y’all produce these documentaries or if you just air them, but I’m grateful. You are making sure the rich history of your city is shared and remembered. I wish more organizations were doing the same thing. The interviews with people who lived it really adds the human element that can be hard to capture.

I had never been to Pilgrim Baptist but I honored it as the birthplace of Gospel music. I was so sad when it burned.

What a powerful and inspirational documentary. Love and respect to those early pioneers of Gospel music.
  • These became the songs that brought us over (trials, tribulations), the songs that got us through. Like "Precious Lord" that got Thomas Dorsey through the death of his family. A couple of months ago I was surprised to see a Lviv, Ukraine choir singing "Precious Lord" in their language.
  • July 8 2022 I came across this wonderful article thank you so much for sharing this with the world

Chicago brought us Gospel, House Music, Disco. Shout out to the Chi-Town, the world loves you. Black Americans are descendants of Judah and Judah means praise keep praising The Most High as you were meant to do ❤️
  • There is difference between entertainment and praising God. Sadly most Gospel singers i see today are entertainers driven by money😔

Excellent!!! Excellent!!! I grew up in the Christ in God Christ as a child I remember all the old school gospel music, foot stomping, organ playing, and choir shouting and the congregation praising the Lord on Sunday morning. This documentary on our African American gospel history is spectacular!!!! Really enjoy this documentary.
