Published 2024-06-25
Shocking scandal with Dior at the centre of it, allegations of appalling working conditions, safety mechanisms being removed, workers expected to sleep in factories to be available 24 hours per day, and bags costing 53 euro to make but being sold for nearly $3000. All information in this video is alleged, it is taken from sources linked below, and is my reaction to and opinion in relation to this scandal.

Luxury seems to be fast fashion with an extortionate price tag.
  • It seems to me that the parent companies don’t look for these abuses. I think it’s called plausible deniability. They can then pretend to be horrified.
  • @SaabGuy-mq3cw
How is anyone surprised by this? It’s pretty much the standard with big luxury brands. There are many investigations into this and the truth about luxury is that it really isn’t luxurious. I fell for it for years. The truth is there’s no difference between what these luxury brands do and what replica brands do. Pretty naive to think otherwise.

Thank you for not sweeping the Dior (et al) labor scandal under the rug.
  • @arit2000
As someone who works as a supplier on the automotive sector, in a company that produces parts that are not sell to the client for more than 1-10€ a piece and who is subjected constantly to visits from the clients auditors to assess the process, the quality, working conditions… I find it unbelievable that no one at Dior knew about this situation. It would be a situation of lack of due diligence that would finish with lots of people being fired, instead I see a company looking the other way and looking for a scapegoat now.
  • They’re called “sweatshops”. I don’t believe Dior didn’t know. They are getting the goods a lot cheaper, and selling on a huge margin. They just don’t care. Just my opinion, not a fact.

I worked for 27 years for the US Government’s General Services Administration (GSA). It was my job to make unannounced visits to companies who held GSA Government contracts and do Quality Assurance inspections. I inspected raw material purchase records, quality control records, performed statistical random sampling from the warehouse and lots in live production. I inspected everything from dog food to carpet to helicopters. I once had to stop production in a Blind Shop who made brooms because of faulty quality control. I’m shocked to hear this kind of process is not implemented in Italy because my dear Father was born in Italy and I consider it part of my heritage. I’m so glad you and others are using your platform to enlighten us who are wearing rose colored glasses.

Isn’t this one of the reasons why we don’t buy fakes? Poor working conditions?
  • @lillygirl7238
So, this unforgivable way of doing business at the extraordinary cost to the safety and well-being of immigrant workers, I suspect, has gone on a long time. It's profit over human rights. Will customers boycott? I doubt it and that's a shame.
  • This is just one of many. The others are going to get better at hiding their practices. All of these brands have ALWAYS done this. There’s no shortage of stories and articles detailing it.
  • @deebee192
I studied the garment districts in Italy and how Chinese companies are moving in and the future implications as part of my business course. There was no way this wasn't going to happen unless companies took steps to stop this exploitation. Dior have absolutely no excuse for this.
  • The whole reason that there is a subcontractor is to minimize costs and make profits bigger. If the people worked for CD, people would expect a living wage with human rights. But a subcontractor situation is the perfect way to be removed from it, while profiting from it.
  • @HunterDimaio
To me, this might have a large effect on the resale value of Dior’s bags.
  • @kouki9181
It's been a while now that I have my doubts about what we call "counterfeits" being actually done by these big luxury brands as another production lines for people who can't afford big amount of money. Now why not believe it's true seeing the type of manufacturers !! Don't you think it could be true !! Luxury brands have production lines with little amount of moneys being sold to people as being called "counterfeits"
  • @monicareyes3436
Amelia & subscriber who brought this to Amelia’s attention, thank you for taking the time to put this video together. I think this is truly disgusting and negligent on their part as well as all of the other organizations who “allegedly”condone these gross practices.
  • @sharontavana587
The reality is that Dior/LVMH is probably paying per piece for items from this type of operation. They will negotiate the lowest price they can get without regard to “the details”. This makes them complicit. They will get their profit and so will their sub…so what is left for the exploited workers is zero. When we buy a $5 blouse we have to know somebody isn’t getting paid. Now we know it may just as well be true for the $5000 blouse or handbag.
  • @angelasoWA
I expect when I pay these prices that the bag is majority made in Italy and by legal workers in safe conditions. For these prices I expect most of these bags to not be made in China, Bangladesh, etc! LVMH has the money to hire staff (multiple staff) to check each contractor on a monthly/weekly basis. The Book tote video is a big fat lie!
  • @DarasDish
This is true for all companies, not just luxury or fast fashion. My friend worked in a company and she was hired by a third party subcontractor. The subcontracting company took part of her wages without her or the main company noticing. When she found out and reported to the main company and said this was not the deal they agreed on, the main company said they "didnt know it was happening". She was also paid 1/4 of the people working at the main company. Moral of the story, never work for a third party or subcontracting companu, its always a bad deal no matter what industry.
