In Godzilla Minus One, post-war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb. We're breaking down the story, including references and homages to the older films, as well as explaining the ending that leaves us with many questions of where things will go next.

12:14 Fun fact: The director, Takashi Yamazaki, did this scene as an homage the movie Jaws. At the Academy Awards, he ended up meeting Steven Spielberg, who he idolized as a director. Spielberg said that he really enjoyed Godzilla Minus One and saw it in theaters 3 times.
  • 29:00 The crew weren't saluting Koichi, they were saluting Godzilla--ritually showing respect to a formidable opponent

My absolute favorite moment is when Mizushima shows up at the last minute to help them with the tugboats. Captain Akitsu says, "I'll be damned! I gotta admit I'm glad to see him!" This line is delivered PERFECTLY and dudes facial expression is amazing.

9:37 I don't think he's afraid to feel so much as he doesn't think he deserves it. In his mind, how can I move on and make a family when all those men on the island couldn't go home to theirs because I failed to act? He confirms this at 14:09.
  • Fun Fact : @ 28:46 Tachibana did not install the ejector seat but it was already installed in the plane. There was a scene where Tachibana observed the cockpit and he saw the German words 'Schleudersitz' written on the seat and told koichi about it in the flashback.

i love the current state of godzilla man. we get incredible human stories like this, while also getting the silly monster fun with the monsterverse. great time to be a fan of the g-man
  • As a Godzilla fan, I’m so happy to see you doing a video on this movie. Love your videos, man.

I loved Doc...you always had the feeling that he was part of scientific research for the war effort that he was not proud of. I watched Godzilla Minus one (and Minus Color) feeling like somewhere Ishiro Honda was smiling. If it had been possible this was the movie he wanted to make.

It's one of the best Godzilla movies to be released
  • "They killed Godzilla!.... For now... he doesn't like being killed very much... he doesn't stay dead..." Perfect comedic tone!

In the Japanese version, she doesn't say the same thing to him at the end. They changed it for the dub and it changes the whole meaning. JP - "Is your war finally over?" ENG - “Can this war of yours finally be done?” Makes it sound like she's more annoyed instead of actually caring if his "war" is over.
  • This movie really kicked so much butt. I wish more movies were made with this level of craft.
  • Something I personally find interesting about this Godzilla is how I genuinely saw this almost eldritch side to him. Shin Godzilla definitely had this element more blatantly, but the way this Godzilla regenerates his flesh and just comes back to life has this eldritch quality to his biology especially considering what may be happening with Noriko

Godzilla minus 1 deserved alot more awards than 1.
  • You know, honestly, this movie's atomic Breath. is 10 times more TerrIfying any other version i've seen
  • Glad you covered this. Minus One is AMAZING. The film manages to cover very heavy topics in a monster movie where the large points on the environment and smaller individual horrors of war never come off as heavy handed or corny. One of the best things this film accomplished, that the American slop never has, is nailing the oppression of the scale. The hopelessness and despair of facing threats so large that one person fighting against it seems ridiculous, but it is truly the only way to try and redeem oneself.

This Godzilla was a huge chunky beast I loved it!
  • The entire Ginza incident is an updated version of the one in the original 1954 version, where he raids Shinagawa, I would highly recommend watching the original even after watching GMO. They're not connected but it feels like they are, and they both have a different atmosphere and story, so it's still enjoyable.
