Wikipedia:
Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a video game series and media franchise created by the Japanese developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega. The franchise follows Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who battles the evil Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist. The main Sonic the Hedgehog games are platformers mostly developed by Sonic Team; other games, developed by various studios, include spin-offs in the racing, fighting, party and sports genres. The franchise also incorporates printed media, animations, feature films, and merchandise.

Naka, Ohshima, and Yasuhara developed the first Sonic game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, to provide Sega with a mascot to compete with Nintendo's Mario. Its success helped Sega become one of the leading video game companies during the fourth generation of video game consoles in the early 1990s. Sega Technical Institute developed the next three Sonic games, plus the spin-off Sonic Spinball (1993). A number of Sonic games were also developed for Sega's 8-bit consoles, the Master System and Game Gear. After a hiatus during the unsuccessful Saturn era, the first major 3D Sonic game, Sonic Adventure, was released in 1998 for the Dreamcast. Sega exited the console market and shifted to third-party development in 2001, continuing the series on Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation systems. Takashi Iizuka has been the series' producer since 2010.

While Sonic games often have unique game mechanics and stories, they feature recurring elements such as the ring-based health system, level locales, and fast-paced gameplay. Games typically feature Sonic setting out to stop Eggman's schemes for world domination, and the player navigates levels that include springs, slopes, bottomless pits, and vertical loops. Later games added a large cast of characters; some, such as Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Shadow the Hedgehog, have starred in spin-offs. The franchise has crossed over with other video game franchises in games such as Mario & Sonic, Sega All-Stars, and Super Smash Bros. Outside of video games, Sonic includes comic books published by Archie Comics, Fleetway Publications, and IDW Publishing; animated series such as The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993), Sonic X (2003–2006), and Sonic Prime (2022–2024); a live-action film series distributed by Paramount Pictures; and toys including Lego construction sets.

Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega's flagship franchise and one of the bestselling video game franchises, selling over 140 million units by 2016 and grossing over $5 billion as of 2014. Series sales and free-to-play mobile game downloads totaled 1.6 billion as of 2023. The Genesis Sonic games have been described as representative of the culture of the 1990s and listed among the greatest of all time. Although later games, notably the 2006 game, received poorer reviews, Sonic is influential in the video game industry and is frequently referenced in popular culture. The franchise is known for its fandom that produces unofficial media, such as fan art and fangames.

Would you buy the Sonic Turds Collection?
  • I would totally buy a collection of the worst Sonic games "Sonic Turds Collection" 😄 That's a weirdly fun idea

2:33 "What is this supposed remaster that comes with Shadow Generations doing?" Sonic x Shadow Generations is: - Giving a FULL native 4K, as in pixel perfect 4K, not a 720p picture being pushed out through a 4K signal. - Giving a real 60FPS upgrade that doesn't break the game's physics like the FPS Boost does for both Generations and Unleashed. - Updated textures and UI elements so that the UI and textures don't look pixelated and grainy on 4K TVs anymore. - Packaging the game with the pre-order DLC that hasn't been available to download since the game came out on consoles. - Allowing the game to be played on modern platforms (Switch, PS4, PS5) - Allows original Xbox One/S/X owners to play Sonic Generations in 60FPS because FPS Boost doesn't work on the Xbox One, only the Series' consoles. - Plays the game natively off of the hardware and take full advantage of the system capabilities, as opposed to a built-in 360 emulator that doesn't take full advantage of either the Xbox One or the Series' consoles. You don't just drop a game in an emulator and call it a remaster. Nintendo did that with Mario 3D All Stars and you all crucified them for it. If you can drop the 360 disc in the modern platform and play the 360 version of a game, it's not a remaster, it's the 360 version being played on better hardware. Also HDR isn't in the original PC release (it's also a bad port even by 2011 standards. It just doesn't require a beefy computer to run). And running the game at higher than 60FPS (something that even Colors Ultimate got right) breaks the game.

Honestly... I'd still rather have 60fps and better visuals and tolerate one broken shortcut and Sonic 1 not working, which I never played anyway... But terrible remaster? Not anywhere near.
  • @AltKaxREAL
I don't really see a reason for this video to exist other than to point out these 2 bugs, it doesn't outright ruin many's experience with the game so... also truly a bummer they probably will never patch these bugs out but eh, what're you gonna do?
  • @RedMarcus14
Sonic fans being sonic fans hating sonic for existing
  • @Retrblu
Regarding the emulated version of Sonic 1, I haven't had the game be slowed down despite using FPS boost so I have no idea how this happened to you
  • @ItsLeavee
11 minutes to talk about two bugs, rent may have been due

3:20. No. Generation's PC port is unironcally one of the absolute worst ports of that era. It is hilariously, horribly made and its held together by duct tape and prayers. The most insane example of this is that turning on the enhanced Unleashed shaders (AKA Unleashed Pipeline) to improve how several sections of the game look (+make it compatible with the Unleashed Project) actually makes the game run significantly better..for some reason. Also, the CPZ bug is also just there on PC too. Weird thing is that it only happened after I updated my setup, but still.

No work was done by Sega for this as it was apart of Xbox's backwards compatibility program. There's not much Xbox could of done for those few issues without changing game code which was off the table for the program. For anyone without a pc, it's 100 percent worth having a broken shortcut and unplayable Sonic 1 so you can have 60 fps as it's a game changer.
  • @NoahNCopeland
2:05 sega released this? is this not part of Microsoft's back compat team's work? microsoft had a whole team that did this for a lot of x360 games for series X
  • @julianx2rl
Ah yes, I remember Antdude taking like, 5 seconds to point this out when he covered this.
  • @SuperSonic68
    1. Makes a video talking about a remaster with the main selling point of having 60FPS 2. Records footage of said version 3. Uploads the video at 30FPS Pup, what're ya doin'?
  • @YamixYT
I just wanna say, for the longest time as a kid I could have sworn I had bought the super peel out in Generations, but I could never activate it, and never saw it again. Could never find anything about it on the wiki. But now I can see at 9:31 that it's infinite continues, which is such a relief to now know.

tbh the pc version of gens out of the box is HORRIBLY unoptimized without mods like better fxpipeline and direct3d 11, so having something like that oob is very valuable to people who can’t/don’t want to mod. i can run gens on intel hd graphics by downscaling the game drastically, with the only real downside being that it looks like i took my glasses off lmao
  • @KOTSOSMC2002
Iizuka already confirmed the Sonic 1 emulator won't be in SxS.
  • bro istg the chemical plant glitch is also in the 360 version its just that instead of happening 95% of the time its like 0.5% I had gotten this glitch many times before even getting a series x
  • I mean it's not a remaster. It's literally the 360 version running in backwards compatibility. A remaster would be a port onto the system. Plus it was done by Xbox themselves. You can also turn off FPS boost on the game if that's causing issues too
  • @julianx2rl
What you mean? That Sonic 1 emulation is running just fine! Just like the original on GBA!
