I've floated in between low gm and t500 for a few years now (masters this season, but let's not talk about it). This is the most accurate and helpful summary I've ever seen on how to rank up. I'd endorse basically every word of it. One thing I'd add, which you briefly touched on, is to play difficult heroes. Moira, Mercy, and Lifeweaver are heroes that make you hardstuck. While Tracer, Genji, Dva, or Zenyatta would be ideal, even someone like Mei or Ana forces you to aim a lot. In addition to that, a mistake a lot of bad players make is just blasting the tank all game, whether it be damage, heals, cooldowns, or ults. Start shooting at and fighting with squishies. Someone who goes from being a healbot Moira to an Ana who does 60% healing and 40% damage to enemy squishies will see their progression rate ramp up. Even if Moira is your calling, fade to different parts of the fight and try to duel the dps. This will force you to learn movement, cooldown tracking, cover usage, map knowledge etc. Just don't play like a healbot or tank shooter and you will get better.

dang, this really is one of the best, most comprehensive guides i've seen, esp being under 25min. Nice stuff Mills.
  • I really appreciate how you broke down mechanical skill vs. pure game sense.

Iโ€™ve been needing this for a while now while playing support Iโ€™ve been stuck in silver and this is helping a lot โค

16:39 wish my teammates would realize this before saying "tank trash ๐Ÿค“

my tip for gold - plat is just to be really aggressive. In gold or plat most players like to play brawl or more slow poke strats. So when you go dive theyr not expecting it and you will roll the first fight. Then they will start to panick swap and u win. This worked for me and i am now in gm
  • "feeding" means doing something that makes you REALLY easy to kill (like going out in the open, ignoring the enemy team or just straight up running at the enemy team alone) "staggering" trying to run away and dying a long time after your team died resulting in you respawning last if your whole team is dead just try to die as quickly as possible in any way so you are groupped up after you all respawn (this does not have to be done with heroes with REALLY good mobility like tracer or sombra since her stealth is a free getaway) so you don't die again while trying to get back to your team honestly people should try to explain what ov2 slang means to newer players you can't expect them to instantly know what you mean oh and if ur trying to get better don't put too much focus on aiming the longer you play the better it'll get most of the top 500 players or popular content creators have thousands of hours on the game I've never used aimlabs or any kinds of aim trainers and still managed to get to diamond in a year by practice alone (I played mainly echo so I had to at least understand all the heroes dx)
  • I disagree, the jump from GM to pro is mathematically closer than that of bronze to GM. People in bronze lack most fundamental knowledge of the game at a strategic level, whereas semi pro is not entirely far from pro.

Personally Iโ€™m a silver overwatch player and I Like to ask myself what is happening to me and my position, then ask myself what has changed about the overall team fight and finally I ask myself what can I do to deal more damage, get more healing, take and/or gain more space. Overall I main dva and used this technique and went from silver 4 to 1 and Iโ€™m also working on my dives because thatโ€™s the meta, if you are seeing this please reply and like and I hope I helped some people.

The tip with sticking to one hero is pretty damn important for Overwatch 2, you wouldn't really expect it but there are 28 maps right now in OW2, if you play 15 different champs, you need 420 (lol) games, just so you played each champ on all maps a single time, if you try to be someone who "mastered" every champ on all maps that would probably need like at least 200 games on each map which would leave you with 84000 games, have fun trying to play that many lol.

Hey Mills, great video, when are you going to have new slots open for coaching? Everything is listed as "Sold Out" currently.

For awhile I felt if I wanted to rank up, I had to counter pick. But every time I did that I wasn't having fun and I wasn't improving with the characters I like to use. I knew what my problem was but I couldn't quite describe it. Thank you for putting it into words. Now I will tell anyone who asks me to swap to pound sand :P
  • It got to where you were talking ab the amount of heroes played and I went from smile to oh God that's me๐Ÿ˜‚
