Welcome to part 6 of the R2-D2 build series: R2-D2 Sound System basics. We'll be looking at some common sound components used in an R2 build and how they work together.

These include the speakers, the amplifier, the ground isolator, and of course the sound board.

If you'll be controlling your R2-D2 with an RC system like I am, the components and method I'm using here will allow you to activate up to 110 individual sound files (11 triggers with 10 sound files per trigger), while using only 2 RC channels! No Arduino or other micro controller programming required! No radio modifications required.

I'm using the Adafruit Audio FX 16MB sound board for several reasons, low cost and no need to program a micro-controller being the two primary ones. The Adafuit FX also works very well with standard RC control systems with its 11 trigger locations and intuitive file naming system to select different sound trigging types. I'm using the Adafruit FX random trigger for most of my R2 sounds.

John... Excellent. videos. I'm seeing the finish line with my R2 build and you have been mentoring me along the way. I bought the same speakers as you for my build. How did you get them installed behind the vents? I printed the MKIII version and my holes on the back of the vent housing don't line up with the speaker holes even though it states it's compatible with 3" mounting. Did you need an adapter?
  • good afternoon Sr. i am watching the sounds videos. you mention a video on just the rotary switch. how do i get to that link. thank you for your valuable information. i just started to get some parts ordered. will start to print the dome parts soon. again thak you much.

Maybe you can help me in my project!!! I have a wrangler and making it r2d2 theme on it, I'm trying to use sounds for when i activate my alarm, when it goes off, when I start my jeep etc. Have a excalibur al-1775-3db alarm and it uses its owns sounds connected to a horn, tested the current going out to the horn and its 12 v, can any sound board use current as a trigger?
  • How do you have your adafruit files named to get more then 11 sounds?
