Bill Browder and Ian Collins argue that the Russian government is silencing dissenting voices through its judicial system, with little transparency or due process. Browder highlights the lack of evidence against Evan Gershkovich and suggests that his imprisonment is due to his critical journalism.

Collins adds that Putin's regime operates like a mafia, using tactics like kidnapping and intimidation to silence opponents.

The United Nations Human Rights office said on Friday it has serious concerns with the sentencing of U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich to 16 years in prison in Russia after he was found guilty of espionage.

"Journalists should be able to perform their essential professional functions work in a safe environment without fear of reprisals – in line with Russia's international human rights obligations," it said in a statement.

"We call for the release of all journalists in Russia detained solely for doing their jobs," the U.N. Human Rights Office said.

  • Don't try James Bond in Russia. You are not as smart as you portray yourself in movies.
