When I started my first company back in 2012, my co-founder Phillipe and I pitched investors on this clever idea: We are going to have our HQ in New York, but we are going to host our dev team in Costa Rica, where we are originally from.

I remember that the idea to have a remote team like that raised a few eyebrows. We didn't end up raising money for that company, not just because of that, but mistakes were made overall. But why shouldn’t we be able to work with people in other countries? Why let location stop us from hiring who we want?

great content Caya. Am from Kenya. A while back software engineers in our country working for local companies were not compensated well but that has changed with the entry of international companies like Microsoft who pay quite well. This ultimately led to salary increases in local companies since they could not bear losing talent to international companies. Their entry together with the option for remote jobs has helped a lot.

As a full stack developer I can confirm that we hate if someone doesn't understand our job properly and still try to manage us. I am from India and we have very big IT service sector here, but its looks like in coming future companies from US/Europe will directly recruit people from developing countries rather than outsourcing project to some IT firm which may or may not provide good quality of work.
  • This is one of the most resourceful channels on YT, keep helping "the innovators in making".
  • @JanWestin
Good conversation! This is a thing that is constantly evolving, but indeed having work that one cares about as an engineer is indeed a huge help in retention & happiness.
  • @Houseofyards
What if non-tech founders who have the financial resources to fund the project? They are not looking for co-founders. Just a dev who can develop the app. What are the hiring tips in this situation?

Seriously saying: Thank you very much for this video! It didn't actually themed in our territory (we work with creatives), but your story has still thought me much about the worth of the right employees.
  • Thank you, Caya! Another very interesting video. Congratulations for the excelent work!
  • @NithinThomas
Great story! I took away a great deal of beneficial information about the founding team. This channel has bootstraped my entrepreneurial mindset. Looking forward towards many more like this!

I’m a developer and by far the startup environment is the most fun

Hey Slidebean, This one's an interesting video, again. I was wondering .... If you could a similar topic, but for other side of the product - the developers themselves. How do we find innovators to work with? #1 is for sure, seek people you know. What if this doesn't work out? What are some of the other good channels and tactics to find and stay interested with the problems we love working with. Something to build the bridge stronger within. I understand this could be a shift from your primary entrepreneur angle. Still, wanted to reach out see if you have any pointers. Thanks for the amazing content. We tuned in!

This is an excellent video, and bang on all across. As an engineer, I remember during my finishing year at university that many of us had different aspirations. I wanted to work on big projects in large organizations, some wanted to be a CEO/CTO even for a 2 man company, others wanted to simply freelance. There's definitely personality traits, but also that changes over time as family and life conditions requirement change (for say travel, working at home, or that hip office). Retention is another risk to manage as if someone feels that the project is puddering, a good chunk of engineers will walk away one after the other and go to the next best thing. Our project just went thru an exodus. Just a few random thoughts, love your videos, keep it up.
  • @majey666
Im a really good tech guy, architect dev, yo u name it. I made an app, but strugle to sell it as know much about business, marketing etc. I need a CEO, where to find them, also most of the CEO i know, are not a nice people you want to spend time with, working either. Maybe a video how to find a business co-founder would be cool.

Can you share other sites for hiring engineers, or job posts for engineers? I’m working with a startup and it’s tough to find the right engineer.
