Lady Galadriel, the mightiest and fairest of all Elves in Middle-Earth. Foresighted, wise, and able to look into the minds of others with mercy and understanding, Galadriel counted as one of the greatest elves in will and spirit. Being essential in the strategical defense of Middle-Earth, Galadriel served as one of the chief opposers of the Dark Lord Sauron. Why was Galadriel so powerful? What was her magic? Did she really destroy Dol Guldur singlehandedly? And what would have happened if Galadriel claimed the One Ring? This video covers the entire history of Galadriel: from her birth during the years of the trees, to her exile from the Blessed Realm, to her travels in Middle-Earth, and at last her resistance against the shadow (Sauron). Other subjects that are covered, is Galadriel’s artifacts: the Mirror of Galadriel, the Phial of Galadriel, the meaning behind Galadriel’s gift to Gimli, and more. There’s also a special focus on Galadriel’s powers, explaining why she was one of the greatest elves in Middle-Earth.

Galadriel is probably the most important character in at least one way.... Had she taken the ring when Frodo offered it to her, she would no doubt have been corrupted. BUT she also would have become as powerful as Sauron. Maybe even more powerful. And she knew it. Sauron may have even known she took it the second she touched it. He would have known he was done and fled. That is why that scene in the film is so epic. It came off some what underwhelming because Gandalf had just fallen into shadow. But is was a major scene. I find it fascinating that Frodo offered the ring to three powerful people who had to deny thier desire to possess it. Gandalf, Galadriel and Aragorn. If anyone of those people took the ring, the fellowship would have failed. But they were all given the chance to possess it. But denied that desire. Such important parts of the whole epic story. It showed that there is good in the world as Sam said. And they were forced to prove it to us. And to themselves. Xendava

This video is excellent, but I disagree with the assertion that wearing one of the three increased Galadriel's desire to sail west. She says to Frodo that she wishes the one ring had never been found. This tells me she would have preferred to stay on in Middle Earth in HER unchanging realm. She sees no good outcome (for herself) to Frodo's quest. If he fails, Sauron wins; if he succeeds, the power of her ring is gone and her people, if they stay on in Lothlorien, will [quote] "dwindle to a rustic folk."
  • Galadriel has always been my favorite character in the LOTR franchise.

So gimli getting the hair from galadriel was really a huge thing and showed his pure heart and galadriel had a hand in the foundation of rohan again i have to thank you for teach me something new about middle earth. Also Boromir get the short end of the stick concerning galadriels presents, the only thing he got was a shiny belt.
  • Galadriel was said to be the greatest Noldor aside from Feanor. She was said to be the greatest threat to Sauron, she could also perceive his mind while fending him off. She sent mist to protect the ancestors of the Rohirrim from Dol Guldur, she took down Dol Guldur. She studied under Melian, Yavanna and Aule. She comes from the 3 houses of the high elves. She is one of the oldest elves (second or third generation). She saw the light of Valinor. I believe, that as of the third age, she was certainly the most powerful elf in middle earth and in Aman.

Great video! It always fascinates me how Tolkien kept so many possibilities open for characters like Galadriel. It gives them some kind of mythological aura, like they can't be completely understood. Also, I love your pronounciation of all the Middle-Earth names! I think it's exactly how Tolkien would pronounce them :)

Galadriel is one of my favorite in the Tolkien legendarium. I know what he means when he says Tolkien had different version of her life. I suggest to read the chapter Galadriel and Celeborn in the Unfinished Tales book. It has a couple of versions of what and where they started. In it Galadriel fights for her mother's people The Teleri elves who were attacked and many killed by Feanor's people so the could steal their boats. It said Galadriel hated Feanor and she despised all he stood for. When She left Eregion to go to Lothlorien she went through Khazad Dum, but Celeborn would not go into the mines as he did not trust the dwarves as he was there when they killed King Thingol and stole the Simaril even though it was not Durin's Folk that committed the theft and murder.
  • Tolkein rarely goes into detail about the lives of women in his works.... I'm saddened a bit by this. It would seem that Galadriel was the only female of the Noldor to duplicate what only Aule, Feanor, Ernardhil and Celebrimbor were able to do.... capture light. She could capture or encase light.... in fact, she was the ONLY one who could capture light in water... though she captured the light of the Silmaril of Earendil in a glass or crystal vial. In this way I think she outdid the others. We should remember that Varda created light, and Aule created the lamps.... and it was from the spilling of this light, which was collected by the Valar as best they could, that enabled Yavanna and Nienna to bring to life the two trees of Valinor... ALL WOMEN. They were different times that Tokein wrote in.... and he did not go much into detail about women and the impact they had or could have....
  • Came here for Helen, stayed for your video. Great job man. She is an intriguing character. thanks for the deep dive into her story.
  • @Voyagerthe2nd
I doubt that the Valar banned her to return at the end of the first age considering she didn't participate in any of the Wars of Beleriand. It would only be Canon that she was too proud to return to Valinor
  • @billrobert3226
I'm just glad they took the idea of her great power and visualized it when they did the new hobbit movies. was a nice way to see how the assault on dol guldor could have played out

I love the story of Eorl's march south to help Cirion Steward of Gondor and how he saved Gondor in the nick of time. On the way as the Eorlingas came nigh onto Dol Guldur a silvery mist issued out in front of them from the Golden Wood that was covered in silvery mist and Eorl was not frightened. He yelled out, "Ride on" He commanded "There is no other way to take. After so long a road shall we be held back by a river mist?" As they went on they saw the silvery mist pushing back the glooms of Dol Guldur and so they went further on then their horses and themselves were reinvigorated as if they had just set out and they hauled ass with the hooves of their horses making almost no sound and arrived to the battle of Celebrant just in time and slaughtered the enemies of Gondor slamming into their real flank. The Gondorian guide riding next to Eorl named Borandir remarked to Eorl that, "The Lady of the Golden Wood is on our side it seems." He remarked when the silvery mist turned out to be helpful. Galadriel was indeed on their side. She was fully aware of what the fall of Gondor would mean for all of Middle Earth including Lothlorien, but more than that she knew she must help the good peoples against the evil of Sauron. Cirion gave a kingly gift to Eorl by giving them the land of Calenardhon and more. Eorl was almost shocked beyond speech at the scope of the gesture of Cirion. Read the account in the Unfinished Tales of Cirion And Eorl..

In Nick Hodges History Buffs review of Elizabeth: The Golden Age, there's a joke where he uses the clip of Galadriel saying, "In place of a dark lord you would have a queen! Not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Treacherous as the sea!" to the Spanish ambassadors, and his editor blended it rather seamlessly. Believe it or not I suggested that joke to Nick years in advance if he ever reviewed that movie and thankfully he went for it. The reason why I suggested that was because both movies had Cate Blanchett and I was like, "You gotta make at least one Lord of the Rings joke in either Elizabeth (1998) or its sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). It would be like reviewing Cromwell (1970) and not making a Star Wars joke or even a Harry Potter joke because that movie starred Alec Guinness and Richard Harris.
