he Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont, based on the 1982 Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. It tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murders of his wife and her lover, despite his claims of innocence. Over the following two decades, he befriends a fellow prisoner, contraband smuggler Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), and becomes instrumental in a money-laundering operation led by the prison warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton). William Sadler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows, and James Whitmore appear in supporting roles.

Darabont purchased the film rights to King's story in 1987, but development did not begin until five years later, when he wrote the script over an eight-week period. Two weeks after submitting his script to Castle Rock Entertainment, Darabont secured a $25 million budget to produce The Shawshank Redemption, which started pre-production in January 1993. While the film is set in Maine, principal photography took place from June to August 1993 almost entirely in Mansfield, Ohio, with the Ohio State Reformatory serving as the eponymous penitentiary. The project attracted many stars of the time for the role of Andy, including Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and Kevin Costner. Thomas Newman provided the film's score.

  • My father killed himself on January 10th 1998. I was 13. The police and ambulances came in the early morning. I cried all day. As I laid down that night, this was the movie that played as I cried and stared into space from shock. And this movie distracted me. I became enthralled. It has taught me. It has made me weep. It has made me smile and be hold principles. This film more or less has been what taught me to be strong. To have empathy. To forgive. To never give up. In some sense, this movie is my father.
  • How on earth can this film not win an academy award. At every level, it is elite.
  • You don't need an "Award" to know this was one of the greatest films ever made! Period!!

I envy the children growing up that are about to watch this beloved movie for the first time. It truly is a masterpiece.
  • I believe it is one of the greatest movies of all time. Brilliant script, acting, directing, and score.
  • In 1994 I was a design student at Uni and I shared an apartment with 2 other guys. One of them knew a lad who worked at the local cinema and he could get us in for free. So one night we decided to go and our choice of movie was "LEON" - However when we got there the lad we knew was not working on that particular cinema room so we couldn't get in. We asked him what movie could we watch then? And he said "Shawshank Redemption" "What! Sounds crap!" we responded. However we decided to watch it anyway. Turned out we were the only ones in the entire cinema room and so had the place to ourselves. At the end of the movie the three of us were in tears. All of us tried very hard not to cry but we were literally over whelmed. I don't think I have ever been so emotional over a movie ever since. We didn't watch it, we experienced it. On the bus home none of us spoke a word. We all thought it was probably the best movie we had ever seen. In a strange way the three of us felt closer because of the shared experience.

This isn't really a prison movie. This is a film about finding a way to live your life to the fullest no matter the circumstances. It's about keeping the human spirit alive in even the most awful and violent places. Once people began to understand that the film took off and became what most of us today would call a classic. Not a cult classic, but a classic that transcends any such qualifiers. It is simply a great film. So go watch it if you haven't already. You will not be disappointed.

The best movie of all time in my opinion.... Any time it ever came on tv, no matter what I was doing, I couldn't help but just to sit there through a million commercials and all and watch it in its entirety.
