UPDATE: At 00:35 the person behind the twitter handle "Unstainable" had hacked and changed the name of the account "Media That is the Thing Ever". Thankfully they've since recovered their account, and as such proper credit for the meme goes to @MoozyTheGodFlow, @wanted_crimnal, @YoungboyKuro, @slictttzer, @ThisLyricsGoRaw and @FurryHunter75. Check it out: twitter.com/TheThingEver/status/151517410754077081… I love you all.

The goofy light hearted movie set in 2002 NEEDS to address 9/11 otherwise I cant immerse myself in its narrative.

"9/11 should be in turning red" is such an over the top bizarre take that im really sure only mr.enter could come up with. I didn't know who said it when the meme first started gaining traction but when I learned it was him it all made sense.

the fact that someone out there is criticizing a movie for not recognizing an event that has no relation to the plot of that movie is concerningly absurd
  • @battleupsaber462
Personally, my enjoyment of the Dark Knight was really soured by the fact that the 2008 Economic Crisis was not mentioned ONCE throughout the entire movie.
  • @PLATINUM_Rook
I really enjoyed Batman 1989, but the movie's potential was severely limited by the fact that it didn't acknowledge the Chernobyl disaster.

Interestingly, this reminds me of the iron giant. The iron giant invokes the Cold War throughout as a plot point, with the villains being explicitly motivated by Cold War paranoia. The thing is, this works here because the story is about the concepts of war and death, with the iron giant being a living weapon. Turning reds story has nothing to do with terrorism, anti-Muslim sentiment, or even grieving lost people, so the aftermath of 9/11 has no place in this film.

I fucking love that Mr. Enters absolute horrendous reviews are finally getting the recognition they deserve lmao.
  • @reethelemon
Complaining about how 9/11 should be featured in a movie about a teenage girl going through puberty is really funny to me.

This movie is just a non stop meme machine for the most wild reasons.
  • I was 13 in 2002. While 9/11 was burned into my mind from the year before and made up a huge part of our political discourse back then, most people had moved on by then. We talked about it, but we didn’t let it control our lives. This “review” is ridiculous.

The "They hit the fucking pentagon" line is also circling as a meme of its self. It was said by psychicpebbles on a Oney Plays video. I think that paired with the Turning Red screen may of lead to its popularity as a meme.

Fascinating that, despite being released in the late 30s, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves makes no mention of Nazi Germany nor the Imperial Japanese invasion of China. Really weird decision by Disney imo

I was 5 years old when 9/11 happened. All I remember from around that time was going to the hospital after getting super ill when my dad tried helping care for me when I had a stomach bug. Big things I recall was playing N64 in my hospital room (I never had a video game console at home) and getting stitches after I fell off the toilet. Unless you had strong connections, kids were literally unaware of the gravity of things.

Finding Nemo is one of my all time favorite movies but one MAJOR flaw I found was that it didn't talk about the Great Depression.

I'm surprised LIMC didn't even bring up the most important detail: the movie takes place in Canada. Even people in America admit that the height of the emotions were a month or two following the attack and then they slowly tapered off as life, for the most part, returned to normal. As close as they are, Canada is still another country and they have no real obligation to give a shit about something that matters to us specifically. Not only is it unlikely a kid would be concerned with the fallout in a post 9/11 American world, it's even less likely a kid from Canada would feel the same way. It's almost as if...we all have different experiences...and we are not a monolith that react to things exactly the same way. Imagine that.
  • Y'know it's funny, Mr. Enter addressed a lot of the criticisms people have leveled at him over the years, it was cool to see him grow as a creator and get better... The one criticism he didn't address was occasionally just having a monumentally stupid, awful take on something lmao
  • @didjargo
For some strange reason, Turning Red got caught right in the middle of extremely polarizing criticisms. You've got a mob of people on one side screaming "This movie isn't gay enough, we want a lesbian make-out scene", a mob on the other side screaming "this movie is sexualizing children! The booty shaking dance was too sexual", and you have one lunatic off in the corner screaming "why didn't they talk about the 9/11 terrorist attacks?!"

As someone who lives in western Canada and being born after it happened, me and my friends can care less because it didn’t really affect us. I can’t speak for everyone but it seems as more a American tragedy then a worldwide one as it’s seen by Americans.
