After a break of a few years Bob Branch organised a week of charters on the narrow gauge railways of Wales which took in the Ffestiniog, Talyllyn and Vale of Rheidol Railways. This video covers the 5 1/2 days at the Ffestiniog which saw the eagerly awaited return of Baldwin No.608. Sadly the loco suffered from badly leaking tubes on the Sunday and with a number of other problems was not fit to run on any of the following days. Scenes included in the video as follows;
Baldwin 608 and 'Prince' near Hafod Ruffydd, solo at Boston Lodge and entering Porthmadog across The Cob.
Posing with 'Russell' at Pen y Mount
Between the tunnels in the Aberglaslyn Pass and finally a diiferent view at Hafod Ruffydd
'Hugh Napier' and 'Lilla' with skip wagons at Minffordd and Boston Lodge
'Russell' at Nantmor, Aberglaslyn Pass and Beddgelert
'Prince' departing Porthmadog
'Merddin Emrys' entering Porthmadog and then passing Boston Lodge
'Taliesin' slipping into Minffordd
'Merddin Emrys' and 'Taliesin' at Rhiw Goch and a view of 'Taliesin' at Cei Mawr
'Merddin Emrys' at Dduallt
'Taliesin' at Campbells Platform
'Blanche' at Cei Mawr and Tanygrisiau Reservoir
'Merddin Emrys' at Tanygrisiau Reservoir
'Palmerston' and 'Taliesin' in the Aberglaslyn Pass
'Palmerston' and 'Prince' climbing through Beddgelert Forest to the summit of the WHR at Pitt's Head
Many thanks to Bob Branch and all involved at the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways and the WHHR for organising the event

Well what can I say? The colours of the autumn were out of this world. It didn't matter any more that the sun was in short supply. That is by far the best I have ever seen of the Ffestiniog! I've run out of expletives!  Sad about the Baldwin 608, but the rest of the locos featured made up for that. Taliesin was quite a handful on damp/wet rail, aided and abetted by open drain cocks (I bet).   On the W&L, I had that problem on the Golfa, with all the leaf mould/drizzle/atomised oil many a time in autumn, during my footplate career.   Bless that little Robin!  Sir, thank you so much to you and all concerned for the treat. Del.
  • Superb video Austin. So many scenes that are quintessentially welsh. All the best.

Excellent again! You've got it to a fine art. Spectacular scenery beautifully captured with autumn colours outstanding. And a happy little birdie at the end of it. Well done. Always a pleasure to watch.

Amazing footage. Well done. I first volunteered on the FR in 1962 and we had no idea what was to develop. It was a question of survival back in those days and seeing what has been achieved so far through your lens is simply amazing. This small corner of Wales still has a firm grip on me. Thank you so much.
  • Excellent footage Austin. Loved the Robin on the wing mirror! Regards, Dave.

Superb captures of what looks like a tremendous show put on by the Ffestiniog - a joy to watch, thank you, Austin. The Cob shots at 01:30 and 11:25 were magical, benefitting from both the natural light at the time and your use of it. The sequences at 12:50 (Minffordd) and 15:50 with that backdrop had such a strong element of theatre. A lovely touch at the end with the robin, the personification of 'patience is a virtue', even if he didn't want the bread. Kind regards, Bob.

This is great! I'm glad to see a steam locomotive I've never seen! And nice view! Great video! Thank you!

Wow, superb footage. That really is unbeatable. The Autumn colours around the railway just make it even better and I'd say the weather was great for atmospheric shots. Good to see Russell and the Baldwin running to Beddgelert and I'm glad Lilla's back in fine form. My favourite of your shots has to be that first one of Blanche with a recreation of Y Cymro. The new carriage 21 in the green and ivory scheme just makes it a whole lot better.
  • Brilliant as ever Austin, well worth the week filming to get these cracking results 👍Didn’t know your a twitcher at heart.
