Who do you think makes the best deep dish pizzas?
  • What's always fascinated me as a now long time ex-Chicagoan, is that growing up in Chitown literally 90-95% of all pizzas sold and pretty much 100% of all mom-n-pops joints were the thin crust. The deep dish only began taking hold and gaining national attention as a "Chicago" style pizza was in the 60's & early 70's. To this day thin crust still dominates, yet anytime someone brings up Chicago and pizza, it's almost always the deep dish. Go figure.

i ate at lou malnati's next to the sears tower

I'm in CT so I've only tried Malnati's (shipped). I LOVE IT!
  • I had all Chicago's pizza, Beggars is up there , but Home Run Inn , Chicago just have them all , Geno's, Giadonnos, Nancy's Lou Malnotties

I'm from Chicago and while I've never heard of most of the joints mentioned early on, the images were, for the most part, impressive! It used to be impossible to find anything actually resembling Chicago Deep Dish pizza, but by the looks of the pizza at most of the joints mentioned, they've nailed it, or come close enough to be enjoyable as their own creations. A few were less successful at actually being Chicago Deep Dish pizzas, but probably taste great, whatever they actually might be.

Had Gino's the other day after a long hiatus since they've closed down most of their locations. It was worth the drive as it's still delicious. My wife's favorite is either Gino's or Lou Malnati's. I prefer Giordano's. Too bad you didn't try Pequod's in Morton Grove which is yummy or Burt's Place, which I understand is 1st Class but I've never tried it.

Uno's Pizzeria and Grill serves a different recipe than what you get at the original Uno's/Dou's locations in Chicago, part of the deal when Ike Sewell's widow sold the original shops to the chain was that they would continue to serve the original recipe. Malnati's is ok, but I think their crust is undersalted. I, like most Chicagoans, usually go for tavern style over deep dish.
  • Not from Chicago, so I don't even know ........ It's always been my opinion that the BEST of anything, is the one YOU like to eat.

Try Jullianni's In Palos Heights, IL, it's a great place for deep dish.
  • Angelos in Sterling Illinois just outside Chicago. Absolute handmade perfection
  • @hellhound1389
The fact that giardonnos was voted best by a new York newspaper shows just how bad they really are when both lou Mallnotis and Ginos East are so popular they're available frozen says even more how popular they are
  • In my experience, people go to rosatis for the thin crust more than the deep dish. The thin crust is to die for.

Gino’s east is very good. I miss them, I don’t live very close to one anymore.
  • @tomsurber2293
