Boxer Lin Yu-ting could not hold back tears after beating her opponent in the quarter-finals of the women’s 57kg (125lb) category at the Paris Olympic Games on August 4, 2024. The Chinese Taipei athlete has been at the centre of a gender row, along with Algerian boxer Imane Khelif. Both athletes were disqualified from the New Delhi World Championships in 2023, as the International Boxing Association said they failed the gender eligibility tests. But the International Olympic Committee said the tests were not legitimate, forcing sports experts to question how to quantify and standardise gender.

wow. its 2024, and people are struggling to determine what male and what female are..

It’s not about gender (as it’s defined today 🙄), it’s about the differences in biology, and ultimately, fairness and safety because of those differences.

Male-To-Female Trans people are barred from women's sports because of higher testosterone and athletic ability. Fair enough. But here's the thing: nature isn't perfect. It is entirely possible to have a naturally born female with an above-average production of testosterone. Some women may have PCOS. Should these women be cut off? Do they become Unwomen because real women should produce the 'correct' range of testosterone? Personally, I think anything that nature produces should be fair game. If a woman just happens to have a higher production of testosterone than the average woman, then she will naturally have an advantage. Of course, this usually means that female athletes and Olympic athletes of the future will gravitate towards women with a tendency to produce higher quantities of testosterone. As long as the higher production of the hormone doesn't block fertility, the woman is a normal healthy woman who just has an above-average production of testosterone.

I'm not sure what is wrong in the comment section. You know that no one is alleging that either one of them isn't born female. This is not a trans issue at all. To me trans issue in sport is pretty clear cut. But this is not one of it.

Well there is a third option which is probably what they are.. they might be androgen insensitive, people who karotype as male, but because they have the insensitivity it makes them have more feminine traits so they are intersex... For these people it really is hard to put them in category. Trans is a very wrought subject, and being intersex is actually kinda a totally different issue. unfortunately the two are conflated just because they have a similar out look / need to conform to the typical binary. Anyway just a sidebar on this controversy dunno what the issue is with the two competitors they could be either karotype, but eh it shouldn't bar them from competition.
  • So if someone trained more then other then it have advantage, also, should we ban this as well? I thought sport is all about competition and have advantage is the main goal -_- insanity

If you look at Imane Khelif case, this is not only anti-trans motivated(even though there is no trans people involved in the case) attack but also racism driven. Black women have always been seen as "manly", "powerful", as such. Those Italian and Hungarian opponents used it to attack Khelif.

Lin Yu-Ting was born a girl. Her ID card number in Taiwan starts with 2, which is the prefix for females according to the Taiwanese government, and this ID cannot be changed later. I don't understand why a naturally born female is being smeared and attacked by an association with a history of wrongdoing, and why the victim herself has to prove she is not a girl. Moreover, she was born a girl and there is no issue of gender transition. I hope that in future boxing matches, losers won't use gestures like 'X' as an excuse for their defeat.

Ewa Kłobukowska, Once the World's Fastest Woman Ewa Kłobukowska was once the fastest woman in the world. In 1964, she represented Poland and won an Olympic gold medal, also breaking three world records. However, in 1967, a 6-person medical team from the Soviet Union and Hungary used secret and improper examination methods to determine that Ewa had XY chromosomes. The International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) then permanently erased Ewa's records. In order to clear her name, Ewa chose to end her own life. But she survived and later gave birth to a child in 1968. Starting in 1992, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) no longer accepted this type of chromosomal examination.

Politics and semantics aside, these 2 fighters have the physical characteristics of biological men which gives them a massive advantage and that's why this is wrong.

Why does gender needs to be defined in sport? If you have Y chromosomes, you are male. Since when has it become acceptable for people to decided whether they are male or female? If in this permissive age, people can self identify, then sport should have 3 categories, male, female and others.
  • The Olympics are a joke now, they've turned into a freak show.

I don’t know how Yu ting can sleep soundly after beating up a woman.
  • The Olympics is a waste of time and money. Way bigger problems than worrying about what these people have in their underwear.

    Today I have decided that I'm a female elephant ❤ It's my freedom ❤
