Real Usable EV Range! All New 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE450E PHEV

Published 2023-07-14
Publisher Tim Esterdahl has been pretty critical of PHEV vehicles with their limited EV range, but this all new 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE450E changes his view. With real-world range of 60 miles of electric driving, this seems like a much more attractive PHEV for most consumers.

8:43 that third button on the door is not a "heated seat bottom". It has an R on it. You push that in order to use your seat controls to move the right front seat. Anyone knowing Mercedes would know that!

    450E.... E. Means EXPENSIVE

The title is good click bait and I don’t blame you, but the RAV4 Prime has been out for a few years now and it combines good range, good efficiency and good horsepower in both EV and Hybrid mode. So maybe, “Finally a good luxury PHEV?”. But I’d still go for the Lexus NX 405 h+. That’s pretty luxurious and still pretty efficient. With my RAV4 Prime I’ve got power, EV range and efficiency, so I don’t feel like I had to compromise at all.
  • Great review. We are on week 3 with ours and love it. We are seeing 57-60 miles of EV range and average 37 mpg in hybrid mode. Most of our around town driving is in EL mode. It cost me on average $3.00 to fully charge and it takes about 3.5 hours with a 220v charger at 40amps. Only downside is the straight combustion engine is a little loud and underpowered without the electric assist. Would love to see this with the 6 cylinder engine but would probably negate the “economy” purpose. No issues so far but time will tell. You know what they say don’t buy the first iteration of anything.

Im waiting for the GLC 400e to come to the US. It'll have very good range!

I'd be curious to see what vin number this was, interesting. By the way, base price is $69,500, this one is porbably $85K with options.
  • @SkippyPB.
60 miles of range is very good for a PHEV. The Jeeps only get 20.

I see seat control on the door for 2nd row seats, which package/option gets them? I have been told by the dealer its not an option for 450e due to battery setup at the trunk.
  • @MrRaitzi
Looked the price in Finland. €95k. Have to look elsewhere. Great car but costs like real EV.
  • @Snerdles
Have you driven the RAV4 Prime or Mitsubishi Outlander? Both have pretty good PHEV range and are much more in the price range of us normal folk.

Just watched your 3L TD video on short trips We have had diesel cars and twin cabs Ute’s for 30 years and this old school thinking is BS and we have never had any problems in 30 years Our verticals are only serviced once a year or 15000km and the dealer puts injector cleaner in the fuel then and no other times. We keep the vehicles for 300000km and they are still fine. They get even better at 80000km and use even less fuel. My 3lt TDI averages 45 mpg and our 2 lt TDI averages 72mpg so why would you have a gasoline car or Ute

Might need to also check about cost of insurance. Also, just saw info about Rivian truck in a minor fender bender costing $42,000 to repair!!
  • @ejohnson3131
All these PHEVs are so overpriced that you’ll never see the gas savings over the regular internal combustion engine models. You’d have to drive the car for 300,000 miles and let’s be honest, a Mercedes is not reliable enough to hit that mark without MAJOR repair costs.
  • @cs1992
Given the amount of Air Conditioner usage and stress on the power grid in my area, I am quite glad that full EVs are not popular. PHEVs seem more practical, but even their strain on the electrical power system would be questionable.

Mercedes does and will continue to suffer from poor resale value. Nobody really wants a Mercedes that’s more than a few years old. Mercedes also suffers from butt ugly design issues. The grill and dash are this Mercedes worst features.
  • @shbhu270
Looks ugly and 5 seats for the price is not worth it. How can 450 only 5 seat make no sense
