Golden Retrievers do some weird behaviors, but there’s usually a reason behind why they do it.

It might be a behavior they’ve kept from their ancestors, or one that’s normal for dogs, but totally weird to our human culture.

A lot of the weird behaviors have to do with the fact that their primary sense is their sense of smell, and that humans and dogs don’t agree on what smells “good”.

Goldens also like to take the leash and walk themselves.

My golden always potties and turns to look directly at me and locks eye contact lol it’s so cute

Almost all of the 6 Goldens we’ve owned like to put their paw on you. They will lift one paw and put it on your arm when you try to pet them (or do anything else). Makes it super easy to train them to shake hands or do a high five!

My loving 13yr old (going strong) golden has slept almost 23hrs a day his entire life. He's never retrieved a thing and can't stand other dogs. But he's my buddy and I'll continue to cuddle him and attempt to play as long as possible. 🥰

My golden covers his leftover food with his blanket to store it for later. Aaahhhhhh!

I love my goldie so so much. She does this hilarious thing when she robs something. Then she stays dead still and pretends she has nothing in her mouth. All the while I can see it. So cute.

My first Golder retriever was weird her name was Cynder and she well even as a puppy she would lean up and fall backward like a trust fall and at first we thought she just lost her balance but nope she was doing it on purpose we even went to the vet about this to make sure everything was ok and right in front of the vet she did they never seen a dog do this before turns out she was doing it for attention. She lived to be 13 years old and I miss her every day

I find the shaking of the toys adorable tbh... Whenever my golden does it we all giggle at home

Everything about goldens are so heartwarming. My golden has brought me and my family so much happiness that I am forever grateful to my Kobe Bean. Even on the worst days she cheers everyone up just by her adorable eyes but the best is how she seems to know who needs some loving and will come into bed or on the couch to snuggle right next to the family member in need

Thank you for the information. I just adopted a 6-year Golden Female and this explains a lot of her behavior.

I always assumed my golden retriever wanting to come into the bathroom with me was due to him wanting to guard me.

Our Golden retriever is 80% human, 5% cat, 5% parrot and 10% dog. He understands both English and Afrikaans. He loves car rides, and sit number 7 with his paw staring out the window. He even sits in the car for hours when it is parked. He always turns in circles before no 2, and spins the grass when he did no 1. He follows me to the loo. He loves walks and the park. Love rolling in the grass. Sweetes being ever. Obedient, smart, social, loving and when the criminals comes into the house he is first to hide under the bed. When approached by aggressive dogs, even being nipped by them he simply takes it without fighting back until the other dog realize he only wants to be friends, then it is zoomie time.
  • I've had three goldens already. Our latest one never licks his Peter O"toole, AND he hasn't barked in over 6 years...he never barks at all. He cries when I'm about to feed him when I go into the laundry room for a scoop of his food...every single time morning or dinner, he cries when he's about to get fed...crazy. Every time I take him outside on the lesh, he walks in the opposite direction looks into the other room, then he comes to the outside door towards me.
