In this episode of Assessing Survival, we ask if the Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) can survive the Mesozoic Period, specifically the Late Cretaceous period. Join me as we weigh their strengths and weaknesses, aswell as speculate on their future.

  • Orcas are so intelligent that they will actively avoid hunting humans as they know they will be hunted in return. They are undoubtedly the best apex predator (that we know of) in the ocean. Another fun fact. Orcas are the only known creature (other than humans) to hunt bull moose.

"The orca might avoid hunting them for they could lose a pod member" Bold of you to assume that the orca wouldn't hunt it just for the trill and prestiege of hunting down the zone boss.

so the question isn't "could orcas survive the Mesozoic" so much as it's "could the Mesozoic survive orcas"
  • "Hm, if the dinosaurs were to gang up on us, it'd cause me a little trouble." "But would you lose?" "Nah, I'd survive." ---Orca
  • It'd be a plesiosaur genocide as soon as they figured out how easy it is to sever the long head

When your biggest weakness is just simply being too good, you know youre doing something right

When we hear "liver" we think of a small organ. In the case of a great white it's liver is 30% of it's body weight. So when Orca's take down a large great white it's a few hundred pounds of fat and nutrients.

If earth was a game. They would first nerf Humans and secondly, immediately after, Orcas.
  • So one of the biggest disadvantages would be that they would suffer from success? Killer-whalebros we so fucking got this!!
  • @Phoboskomboa
Intelligence is OP and goes hand in hand with social organization. Apes, dolphins, orcas, wolves, elephants. There's a reason none of these animals have natural predators.

Something I think you've overlooked it's the Orca's ability to hold grudges. If Orca's figure out that mosasaurs are a threat when big, but not when small, they might attempt to take out any mosasaur they see

Spawns in the Mesozoic Damn not enough food here - Orcas probably
  • @Godzilla00X
Prehistoric Marine Life: i dont want to fight you orca Orca: I wouldnt want to fight me either
  • @minomerle9906
I love how with most animals you would assume they might have a rough time in these time periods, but Orcas would simply kick butts in a straight line!
  • I think people seriously underestimate how big of an advantage the combination of intelligence and pack hunting is. Those are the reasons why humans dominate the way they do. Orca's have the same strengths (just not to the same degree). Thats why I think they would dominate most ocean environments. Mosasaur would dominate a one-on-one matchup, but orcas are pack hunters.
  • They becme so successful they outcompeted their own ancestors and became a time paradox

Competition for orcas is just a fancy term for ''fun food source''
