When “regular people” think of custom cars, they think of West Coast Customs, thanks mainly to MTV’s early 2000s hit show, “Pimp My Ride.” Each week, West Coast Customs transformed beaters into cartoonish reflections of their owners’ personalities, brimming with wacky mods. Nearly 20 years later, West Coast Customs is still on TV, they’ve expanded around the globe, and they have their own roller coaster! How has a shop famous for installing monitors on every flat surface available remained relevant for so long? How did they get there in the first place? And why do so many celebrities turn to them for custom work? Join James Pumphrey for the lowdown on the world’s most famous auto shop, West Coast Customs.

Props to Guilherme Lopes (@_glopes on the gram) for the dope editing.

So many episodes ended with me thinking, "I'd be so pissed if they stuck a fishtank in my console."

I remember how excited me and my twin brother would get when pimp my ride would come on, we were in middle school in the early 2000’s and the cars were always goofy but the show still had a huge impact on us becoming obsessed with cars and it’s just unforgettable!
  • Day 9 of asking for an Up to Speed on how Donut Media came to be
  • Im still waiting for a top gear up to speed because some say- if you ask them enough times, they will do an up to speed.
  • I remember GTA San Andreas mods like "West Coast Customs paint shop"

"In the early 2000s" Or as I like to call em, "The 90s: Part 2"
  • When the show ran, it was an insane hit. Everyone liked it! But it only took a few years before it got cringy, and we watched it just for the laughs. I'm so glad Ryan got out of MTV's clutches, and could run the shop like it was meant to from the very beginning.
  • When they started branding with Best Buy, my son, a BB auto tech, got to be in one of their episodes and go to Michigan for a NASCAR race. Carl Edwards drove the WCC/ BB Ford. He had a blast for a couple of weeks.

"Yo Mad Mike, how many monitors you put in this thing?" MM - "Man you're not gonna believe it. We were able to install One Hundred and Forty-two monitors in there!" This is how I remember Pimp My Ride.
