How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

This was one of the most physically demanding builds we’ve ever taken on but it completely transformed the look and feel of the container home…what ya’ll think? Was all the little attention to detail steps from the Joyce guard (I’m calling it that from now on) to the hidden fastener system worth it??…ok, I’m going for a nap now 🤣
  • Dumpy reminds me of an uncle, always willing and able to share experiences and expertise. What a mentor.

The deck is beautiful. You're doing a great job. Don't ever get rid of Dumphy. He's a treasure. Pat yourselves on the back and step back to admire your hard work. Slow and steady. You'll look back on this in no time enjoying the space/home with friends and family.
  • A friend of my stepdad's built an old-fashioned salt-box house with cedar siding. He's taken very good care of it and only had to replace a handful of boards in the 50 years since he built it. Cedar will last a lifetime or longer if you take care of it. Excellent choice, fellas.
  • We have a small composite porch and it is maintenance free. BUT in the summer you could fry an egg--it burns my feet even if I'm wearing sneakers. And in the winter, it freezes before any other surface; light snow turns into a sheet of ice. It looks great after 13 years, but it's not comfortable 10 months out of the year. Cedar all the way!

Dumpy is an absolute legend,, we all need someone like him in our lives!! The deck looks amazing guys!!
  • @Che-e
Of course, it's worth it. It's one step closer to achieving your dream
  • Cedar decking was the right way to go, You won't have to touch it for decades, always looks smart, under the deck you can store pool stuff, lounge chairs, lawn mowers, just make a small door and you have another storage areas.Your choice of course. Looks great!
  • I hope you give major kudos to Dumphy. He is a treasure. What’s the most impressive thing is his sharing his knowledge with you two. You’re like sponges soaking up his knowledge. Cheers to a good week!!
  • @ankiking
The project taking long is good for us viewers - we want to stay with you for a long time!
  • I think I'm more anxious than the owners to see this castle ready, it's going to be wonderful.

Congratulations guys. It’s good to see you have recovered from the disasters of the previous builder and have progressed so far and so well. You are SO fortunate to have Dumpy as well. Full marks to him, too!

Not sure if this will put your mind to rest but we just pulled up a 20 year old porch that looked rotten on top to put up a timber tech deck and the old joists and beams actually looked great still. You’ll be fine!
  • Dream team you all are! Dumpy's attitude is my favorite! Loved his "I hope I never build another deck" comment! And his laugh is contagious! And holy that deck is looking absolutely incredible!!!!! The screwless look is perfection!!! All the hard work put in was for sure worth it! Well done!!! The skirting with the deck board looks so good too! And the water slide coming back up means it will have to happen! My hopes are now too high for you to not have a water slide! It will also add to the indoor outdoor space! Haha!!! Another amazing video!!!!! ❤

The deck is beautiful! Such a hard job but oh so worth it. I loved watching Eddie and Charlie playing in the river. They are living their best life.
  • ❤ Dumpy, I'm sure you don't need to be reminded of how fortunate you guys are to have his skills.

I've probably said this before, but I am OLD so am allowed to repeat myself! I really enjoy your overhead view, where you show the forest surrounding your beautiful container abode. It reminds me of the family farm in Eastern Ontario, which included a lake, and Dad and I would walk through the forest alongside the fields to reach the lake. My biggest joy was being able to snowshoe through the forest to (and on!) the frozen lake when I was home from University for "Reading Week"!
  • @anthonypecorara
Nothing beats the feeling of real wood! It looks amazing guys, keep fighting the good fight!
  • You’ve made a gorgeous choice with the cedar and it’s really hard wearing, from what I know. Your home, your rules, your deck your choice! Looks fabulous.
