Putting Up the Corn We Grew, Rocks in Appalachia, & Tipper's Confused about the Seasons

Published 2024-08-11
We are so thrilled to have grown corn this year. We haven't been able to since Pap died in 2016. It wasn't the best corn patch we've ever had but we did grow enough to eat, share, and put up.

The last walk l got to take with my daddy, a couple of months before he passed away. I saw a beautiful rock in the path. I picked it up and put it in my pocket. I put the date on it and last walk with dad. I will treasure that always. To some it's just a rock, to me it's a treasure.❤

I’m a fall baby, absolutely the best time of the year , cool crisp mornings, beautiful sunrise, sunsets, sweaters, fires, falling leaves ..bon fires !! Can’t wait

I was raised in the foothills of Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia; and left at a young age and ended up in the mountains of Arizona. I often long for those times when sweet corn was harvested and preparations made for the winter. Cutting, splitting and stacking firewood is still a thing to be done and the timing can be important. There is almost no "fall or autumn" here, It goes from summer straight into winter. Today is August 10th and a month from now will be first frost and the smell of wood stoves in our valley. Thank you all for posting these videos; Its still a part of so many folks history

Ah memories in the corn patch. Great aunts and uncles shucking cutting bagging and freezing to help us with our corn❤❣️

That heat will do you in. I live in Florida and I’m very miserable. We can’t even go out side. I love watching and listening to the bugs and the birds and listening to both of you talk. I miss the country and the beautiful trees and grass. I can’t forget the sound of the creek at Corey’s .thank y’all for sharing
  • I’m glad to hear you describe Matt’s weak spell as “the weak trembles”. That’s what I grew up hearing here in GA and still call it that today. I ordered the cookbook and it came yesterday. I’m enjoying it very much.
  • I would put a drip system in all your garden beds, set the timer and the weather can do what it will 😊 I freeze my corn but...I shuck it clean, boil a big pot of water. When it's a full boil, I put all my ears in, lid on...heat Off! Let it sit for 10 minutes-ish & done. Some I cut off into bags, some whole & always make sure to freeze some cleaned cobs for stocks or chowders🌽 Herbs like basil, sage, chives,parsley.. , I freeze in flattened bags with evoo. I dry my oregano, mints, + parsley, chives👍

Hey guy's, I find it hard to believe it's almost the middle of August. Looking forward to the cooler weather and I know Matt is too, along with his deer hunting. God bless y'all.

Tipper and Matt I ,too, am longing for colder weather. This Southwest GA heat is awful. I love all the seasons but I especially love the cold weather Thank you for so many wonderful videos ❤

Yes, it is a little sad to close up the summer garden, and my tomatoes have only just begun to ripen! I planted them in late April! 😮 But I am always so so ready for fall and cooler temps. I'm like Matt, we had 70s this last week, but back up to 90s this week. Ugh, almost makes me angry! 😁 Have a lovely evening.😊🧡🌅🍂

❤beautiful corn. Pap would be so happy.🎉😊❤ That is our favorite!!!
  • It seems like you just barely planted the corn. Time flies! Glad it was a good harvest.

Wish I could share some rain..after being so very dry in June and first half of July we had 12" over the last two weeks of July..Debbie dumped another 10" and we are still getting storms each day...needless to say what the drought left in our garden all the water has taken the rest 😢 but hopeful for next year...we put up our corn the very same way and when I take it from the freezer I never add anything to it but it is so good and nice to have for winter...I think gardening people are eternally hopeful ❤
  • So good to listen to you and Matt. I'm like Matt even when I was a teenager I didn't like hot weather. But living in Florida it's a way of life. When I was growing up we felt the different seasons but in the 70's I think we lost it. Even back in the 80's I mowed the yard in December! I don't like when it freezes much but I like the cold weather. Have a good evening. ❤🌻

I put up corn exactly the same way with the exception of, after I blanch the corn, I place it in ice water to stop the cooking process. It also makes it easier to cut off the cob as it is not hot. I am sooooo looking forward to fall as well. Its my favorite season. Thanks Tipper!!!
