1. get alligator clips doing this with just electrical tape is bad idea
2. use copper wire thin enough and long enough that it is fairly flexible other wise hard to move tip around. It is plenty conductive over the distances you need.
3. Connection the pencil lead to the copper wire is a pain. I did it with electrical tape but try to find a better way. I found getting it to cross it instead of lie side by side was easier.
