Gordon Murray - TST Podcast #818

Published 2023-04-20
Gordon Murray designed the McLaren F1 as well as a number of successful Formula 1 cars. Today he is the head of Gordon Murray Automotive which builds supercars of a very special caliber. Light. Focused. Naturally-aspirated. Manual gearbox. Many RPMs.

Today we're talking about their most recently debuted model, the T.33 Spyder, a breezy piece of carbon beauty powered by a 615HP V12 that redlines at 10,250RPM. We talk about the design process; what inspired the shape; why the windshield is different from every other supercar; why the car doesn't need side intakes; Gordon's dislike of buttresses; his guilty pleasure car; the type of car he's NEVER owned; and something he collects that you wouldn't expect.

What a treat. Gordon is such a breath of fresh air in the world of overstyled hypercars and 3,000 lb.+ curb weights.

A catch-up with Gordon every 6 months or so on the show would be a real treat (schedules permitted). By far one of my favorite guests. Great job fella's.
  • @Tain950
Gordon Murray is my favorite car designer. I love his mindset and car philosophy when it comes to light weight vehicles.
  • Matt this conversation is next level! I love how this time, it wasn't you interviewing GM, it was you shooting the shit with GM about an absolute masterpiece. You already got his vibe from the last interview so you were really prepared to just enter his world with this one and it shows. I was not just captivated, I'm mesmerized by every GM interview I can find on youtube, but being mesmerized and then being dropkicked by your intelligent and contextual sense of humour, watching this talk was a very enjoyable experience as a fan of yours and a petrolhead. So thank you for bringing him on. It looks like you really enjoyed that as a fan as much as we did as a fan of both of you.
  • the man is a true genius, and the t50 in person was a true spectacle to the eyes and ears
  • Such an amazing listen thank you Gordon also great interviewing Matt and Zach
  • Huge cred to Matt for engaging on an intellectual level that Professor Murray clearly finds enjoyable and thought provoking.
  • I love these episodes with Gordon. While there's quite a lot of content of him, it's rare that you see him in a relaxed and casual feeling setting. I feel that's how he is in this and the previous episode he guested on TST. And to me, that always translates to authenticity. Keep it up Matt and Zack! Long time fan here from the Philippines! 🇵🇭
  • Listening to Gordon murry is something i love so much. I could sit and talk and listen to him for days without end.
  • @sasha-taylor
imagine if Gordon worked closely with, say, Toyota on a new MR-2, to create a true and pure driver's car that's actually attainable by more than 500 people in the world. I think that'd be neat.
  • The last conversation with Gordon was amazing. This one was even better. Three true car enthusiasts who get it. Gordon seems to truly appreciate and enjoy the great questions and comments. The one question I want to ask him is what is coming next after the T33. He's built this beautiful factory, so there has to be more brilliant cars in his mind.
  • @bentucker2301
Gordon is beyond cool. He's on his own level. Also some great questions from the viewers. Certainly better than the, what new Porsche should I buy, flex questions
  • Brilliant - I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a TST review of the T50 or T33.
