Beefy Red was a San Francisco Bay Area music band (1969--1972) based in Marin County, which played at various Bay Area venues, including Bill Graham's Fillmore West from October 22--25 in 1970. Beefy Red performed frequently at San Anselmo's 'The Lion's Share', a club often cited as one of the most historic in the history of the Marin County music scene. The group was most noted for playing "swinging R&B" but played other syles like blues and jazz. [Wikipedia article]

Thank you so much for posting this! I have not heard Beefy Red for 45 years but always treasured their memory...now brought back alive, thanks to this recording! Bravo! A community service for old Marin!

I will try and find that for you. I personally like the vocals on this!

Whiteram53 here again, 2 years later.  Sorry it took me so long to get back to you birdiexnumnum.  With YouTube's "new & improved" configuration, I cannot seem to figure out how to send a message to your channel!  Here's how I joined Beefy Red:  I moved to San Francisco in 1967.  About a year later, I was befriended by fraternal twins (Roger & Nancy) about two years older than me.  They were friends with Barry Finnerty, because Roger had gone to high school with him.  Later, I attended the same high school but Roger & Barry had already graduated by then.  I was singing and playing blues harmonica at the time, listening to a steady diet of soul music.  By the time I was 17, I was roommates with Barry and he'd started up Beefy Red so I was invited to join as a vocalist, because L.B. 'Kyle' Keilman was already playing harmonica for them.  We rehearsed quite a bit -- I only did a handful of tunes -- then recorded the above tune & Bobby Blue Bland's "Save Your Love For Me".  I only ever did one gig with the band -- at the Lion's Share in San Anselmo.  It was terrifying because the band was big & loud, and I couldn't hear a note I was singing.  I was told my performance was decent, but how would I know?  Shortly afterward, I had to go to college in Ohio -- so that was my brief tenure with this cookin' group!

Thanks! You can add my name to the rostrum if you wish, but at the bottom since my tenure with these ass-kickers was brief (I had to go off to college to avoid the Nam draft): Luke Ehrlich. BTW, I'm still in touch with Barry Finnerty! Eight years later, I founded a reggae band in Boston called the I-Tones, for which I sang lead and played bass. Search our music video as "I-Tones Walk On By". Can't seem to post a URL without getting a stupid error message.....

I was all of 18 years old when I cut this vocal with Beefy Red, my first studio recording. It was at a small studio in San Anselmo, I was nervous and had a bad head cold. And I was trying way too hard....makes me cringe now. The other tune we cut was better: a cover of Bobby Blue Bland's "Save Your Love For Me". Got this one you can post?

Love that version of "Walk on By!" Please message me at my Facebook site, Luke. I'd like to know about your tenure with the group. "birdienumnum"
