When Lucy was depressed she often displayed the word "hurt" in sign language and refused to eat.

American zoo keepers: We taught this gorilla basic sign language and are trying to see if it's capable of complex thought. North Korean zoo keepers: We got this chimp addicted to cigarettes.

For anyone sad about the kitten, she didn't actaully hurt her kitten. The kitten got out and sadly was run over. Koko was very sad and expressed it to her owners and than whimpered.

"Flicking the old chimp bean" is a sentence that has been spoken.

The sad part about Lucy is that her affinity to humans is probably what ultimately got her killed. Imagine seeing a bunch of "your kind" that you grew up with, you'd try to make contact or at least not feel too threatened.

The most horrifying Chimp story I've ever seen is that of Travis the Chimp. Similar to Lucy, he was adopted by a wealthy couple as a pet. But tragedy struck when the couple's child died in an accident. So they did the most natural thing possible................ by treating their pet chimp, Travis, as if he was their own son. Just like Lucy, he was dressed in human clothes, he loved to watch TV, drank wine, and when the husband died to some heart condition, the wife went as far as bathing with the chimp (And I pray to god that's as far as she took it, if you know what I mean). Travis was so intelligent and so adapted to living like a human that he knew how to use keys to open doors, and by doors I mean both house doors, and vehicle doors. Keep that in mind, it becomes relevant later. Just like Lucy, Travis was overwhelmingly stressed out, having been raised like a human, but not identifying with them and unable to comprehend what was so different about himself. One day he stole his owner's keys, used them to unlock the house and got loose on their enormous back yard. The owner called a friend of hers that had helped take care of Travis before, and the two women began searching for the chimp. The friend however, made the very serious mistake of grabbing Travis' favorite toy, a Tickle-me-Elmo plushie, and began squishing it to get Travis' attention. Ohh boy did she get it alright. Upon seeing her manhandling his most precious posession, Travis went, for lack of a better word, *FUCKING APESHIT CRAZY* and began to brutally and savagely maul the poor woman. His owner tried what she could to pry him off of her, even hitting him several times on the heaad with a shovel, and at one point stabbing him in the back with a butcher's knife, which only served to piss Travis off even more than before. The now terrified owner ran to her truck and lock herself in, frantically calling 911 while Travis went back to the, now mercifully unconscious friend to resume savaging her body. Eventually cops got to the scene, and as soon as Travis saw their police car, he lunged at it, and opened the driver's door, and tried to pull the officer off. The surprised and astonished cop managed to get his gun out just in the nick of time and fatally shot Travis four times across the torso. Travis then fled back inside the house, crawled up inside his cradle, and succumbed to his injuries. Words fail to describe just how horrific were the wounds Travis inflicted on the poor woman he mauled. He bit off 9 out of her 10 fingers, and completely ripped off the left hand, he also quite literally took her face off, as in, he bit off chunks of flesh off her face, bit by bit until her entire facial structure was just gone, gouged her eyes out, and ripped her jaw off. By some divine intervention of every deity known to man, the poor woman was alive. She needed dozens upon dozens of surgeries just so her head could look like a vague resemblance of a head, but be warned, if you google pictures of what her face looked like pre-surgery, just heed my advice and DON'T do it on a full stomach. The craziest part of this whole ordeal is that Travis' owner, went ahead and got herself a new chimp as a pet, but fortunately, the crazy old bat passed away the next year, and the chimp was returned to a zoo where it belongs. The friend made a full recovery, even underwent a very experimental face transplant surgery, which, while it makes her look like a partially melted mannequin, at least gives her the resemblance of a human, instead of what she looked like prior. While she's blind and only has one hand with one finger, she stubbornly refuses to die, and just trudges on. If you ask me what a badass is? that woman is one.

I like how his depictions of scientists are just people in space helmets
  • @Spailon
The chimps and humans literally making their hands shaped like the words they’re signing is just great imo

“As the years went on, Lucy got more and more violent, regularly trashing the place to get out the frustration of not being able to comprehend what was so fundamentally unnatural about her existence.” Damn, honestly sounds like what a lot of people go through.

Normal people: "Thermos." Washoe (an intelectual): "Metal cup drink."

It’s always a good day when I hear that music and then “hey kids.”

A video on Koko would be excellent, a lot about her was dubious at best to outright lies and horrible living and work conditions.
  • @loaafe
Koko never ripped up a kitten, but she did rip out a sink and say “cat did it”
  • @Ryzard
"and then Lucy got poached like an egg" got me good
