I’ve always felt that the use of minor and “schrunchy” cords in this was a beautiful representation of how falling in love can be both beautiful and unsettling at the same time
-
I'm holding my breath until you react to my favorite PTX song, Can't Hold Us.:face-blue-smiling:🤣It's not just fun, but it has so much going on and I would love to hear you break it down.
-
PTX and their bell tones! They do it in so many of their arrangements. One of my favorite and most unique examples is in their mashup of New Rules/Are You That Somebody. I always smile like an idiot, every damn time I hear it. Supertonix indeed! I am always so happy to see one of your reactions pop up! Great commentary, thank you!

Good God man, you’re like an actual musical scientist. I couldn’t catch all of that on the first listen, even if someone drew me a damn map!

Pentatonix's homophonic arrangements were inspired by The Rescues "My Heart With You", which Scott learned from his college a capella singing group and taught to the rest of the group when they were getting started (though they didn't record it until ten years later, on their Evergreen album). Their 2013 original "Run to You" (which you've reacted to) was based on it and most of their albums include at least one arrangement that is at least partly homophonic. While their other songs are usually recorded with each singer in the studio separately, they are together in the studio for the homophonic songs. And in live performances they will put down their individual mics, ask the audience for quiet, and sing in a semi-circle around a light.

I love this version so much. Pure five part harmony.
-
I believe this was the last song they recorded before Avi left the group. His departure had already been announced, and when they rotated to him at the beginning and he came in on “Shall I stay…” it brought a tear to my eye. BTW… I’ve quit listening to pretty much all other reviewers. Your ear for hearing the details and explaining them so simply is stunning. Look forward to all of your reactions ❤!
-
I love, love , love when Mitch and Avi harmonize! Avi's warm bass mixing with Mitch's glorious highs is just stunning.
-
I think you’d really enjoy their performance of My Heart With You .They just sing it standing in a circle. So beautiful.
-
It reminds you of bells because they're singing bell tones. When they released this album kevin went live and was breaking down the song's and he excitdly talked about loving the part where he and Kirstin sang the bell tones. It's become kind of a ptx staple and once you're aware they do them often they're pretty easy to pick out.

Nearly every evening, a Mix of your reactions, run on my TV while i'm knitting and i Love how the Playlist grows. And i'm still astonished how you are able to hear all those Details Sometimes. Another great reaction :_eggWink:

I love how you are able to identify all the notes in those scrunchy chords and document them for us. You are also the only one who does deep analysis that doesn't bore me. You are interesting and entertaining in your presentation; thanks so much for that! 👏
-
Dude! You are spot on as always. Love how you break down the music and educate us as to what we are hearing. Since you like this one you need to react to My Heart With You. This is so beautiful. I prefer the live version. I think you would like that one too. Just shows their voices off. No place to hide. Each voice has to be perfect or the song falls apart. Spoiler alert...the voices are perfect. Thanks again for all you do to educate us!! I am a very attentive student. LOL 😆 🤣 Sending love and hugs from Texas!!! ❤❤

Listening to and going to a capella shows in college was part of how my husband and I got together. We chose this PTX cover for our first dance at our wedding. Love it so much ❤

As soon as I heard you mention Imogen Heap, I checked to see if you'd reacted yet to PTX's cover of her song "Aha!", and you haven't. While there is an official very early music video of it, don't react to that. React instead to the one recorded live at the Star Vista in Singapore, from their 2015 tour. It's an epic performance that begins with the lead-in that Avi brought to it - a piece he'd performed with his chamber choir back in college - Ave Verum Corpus. My understanding is that they stopped using it after Avi left. Multiple Mitch slaps in that performance.
-
Gives me chills every time. Love Mitch's voice in this one. Another great reaction. Thanks. 😊
-
This is a Kevin arrangement. I actually really enjoy the non beat box songs.
-
You mentioned in one of your other reactions that your favorite group was The Beach Boys. PTX performed Heroes and Villains in front of The Beach Boys at a tribute for them. It was amazing. I would include a link, but I understand the YouTube gods frown upon that. Love your reactions.

13:20 - those are frequently called "bell tones" - another common Pentatonixism. Also, Mitch has listed Imogen Heap as one of his vocal influencers.
