See a sculptor recreate Antonio Canova’s “Venus” step-by-step, from clay to marble | Time Lapse Art

Published 2023-06-07
Master sculptor Fred X. Brownstein recreates Antonio Canova’s sculpture “Venus” using Canova’s unique 200-year-old techniques over the course of 6 months.

How does Brownstein go from a foot-high clay sketch to a near-identical marble copy of one of Antonio Canova’s most famous sculptures? Watch this behind-the-scenes time lapse using Canova’s marble sculpting process to find out!

Brownstein uses his hands and small, wooden tools to create a rough clay sketch model called a bozzetti. He then moves on to a full-scale modelli that is cast in plaster, creating a hollow mold. This mold, in turn, serves as the basis for a refined plaster model that’s copied into a marble version where Fred makes the final touches.

Where Canova had a workshop with assistants, Fred did all of the sculpting himself!

See Canova’s clay, plaster, and marble sculptures, including "Venus", in the Canova: Sketching in Clay exhibition open June 11 – October 9, 2023 at the National Gallery of Art: www.nga.gov/exhibitions/2023/canova-sketching-in-c…

I think you should change your title. Instead of putting "a scupltor", you should put his actual name. Not many people check the description and putting his name in plain view seems better.

This IS amazing, magnificent, and neato frito, but my favorite part is his newspaper hat.
  • @andremetayer1467
It never ceases surprising me how the two steps before the final sculpture are themselves pieces of art.
  • @Feynman_Fries
The fact that he had to repeat the process THRICE and with three different techniques! He first sculpted it with clay using the additive method, then make a cast with plaster of paris, and then sculpt the same out of a marble slab using the subtractive method. This is absolute monk like concentration.

What a chance to have cameras, youtube, art everywhere, whenever we want, appreciate the artists labor. What a chance...

seeing this is easy to believe sculptors falling in love with their work and asking the gods to bring them to life. so much time

A lifetime of study and craft in a 6 minute video, thank you Master for sharing with the world.
  • @haikuhsu
How amazing to see the entire process like this. It's so beautiful.

This is the real deal! Thank you for sharing. Most people have no idea of the time and skill that goes into Mold Making and Subtractive Stone Carving. Sadly, both casting in plaster and using a point method to enlarge/transfer to stone is becoming a lost art. More exhibits and videos like this, please!

No shortcuts, I'm in awe at the skills on display. Very impressive.

Love that he does this by hand... this quality of marble asks you to give up your soul... and machines can't do that.
  • @rob9340
I think that is one of the most beautiful things I have ever watched.
  • @Linx_28
he makes one art to start another art, it's amazing

Staggering. Hypnotic to watch - thank you and congrats to all involved in the commission. Not least the master sculptor! I visited another Canova piece at Chatsworth in the UK recently and wondered at the practical processes behind these beautiful masterpieces. And you’ve answered so many questions, thank you!

As a professional painter I loved the sculpture study in the beginning. Its exactly how I plan out my paintings. Working out the difficult shapes like the tilt of the head before you start. Just excellent 👍
